ROUNDUP: Buechner, Batchelor win state wrestling championships

Jan. 13—Terre Haute North senior Sophia Buechner became the first girls wrestling state championship in her school's history and Northview's Varzidy Batchelor matched former West Vigo wrestler Torie Buchanan with her third championship in the girls state finals Friday night.

Buechner, a semistate runner-up in the 120-pound weight class a week ago, pinned both of her last two opponents Friday to make Patriot history. Her season record improved to 20-3.

Batchelor won in the 235 class, finishing her season at 26-1.

Trista Powers of Terre Haute South placed fourth at 190 pounds and Alex Brown of Northview placed eighth at 170.

Track and field

—Coughlan-Malloy cup returns home — At the Indiana State Indoor Track and Field Facility, the host Sycamores outscored Illinois State in both men's and women's competition to win the Coughlan-Malloy Cup for the first time since 2017.

Sycamore men outscored the Redbirds 92-56 and the host women came out ahead 86-62.

Indiana State's combined total of 178 points and its overall margin of 60 points were both the best marks for the Sycamores since 2015.

Terrance O'Bannon and Will Staggs broke facility records in the 60-meter dash and pole vault respectively, while O'Bannon and Rachel Mehringer (60-meter hurdles) set facility records.

The Sycamores will have their first indoor meet on the road next weekend at Indiana.

Boys basketball

—Northview 62, South Putnam 45 — At Brazil, Brayden Goff had a triple-double with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 13 assists for the winning Knights on Friday.

Northview, 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the Western Indiana Conference, hosts Plainfield on Saturday. South Putnam, 4-9 and 1-7, is at Cascade on Tuesday.

—South Vermillion 51, Fountain Central 43 — At Veedersburg, the Wildcats picked up their second straight crucial Wabash River Conference win Friday.

Luke Bush had 13 points and Brayson Shoults 11 for South Vermillion, now 8-6 and 2-1, hosts West Vigo on Wednesday.

Fountain Central, which got 21 points from Isaac Gayler and 12 from Will Harmon, is now 6-5 and 1-1 and hosts Seeger on Saturday.

—North Central 51, Paris 48 — At Paris, Ill., the visiting Thunderbirds picked up an interstate win Friday.

The balanced North Central attack included 13 points by Jayden Hooper and TraShaun Cockrell, 11 by Ethan Willis and 10 by Tyson Hardin. Cockrell and D.J. Suggs had eight assists each for the T-Birds, 6-6, who celebrate homecoming Saturday against Vincennes Rivet.

Paris, 5-14, got 13 points from Drew Rogers, 12 from Jackson Rigdon and 10 from Carter Eastham.

—Casey 58, Marshall 52 — At Casey, Ill., the host Warriors pulled away in the fourth quarter for a Little Illini Conference win.

Grant Cochonour had 17 points, Hayden Parcel 16 and Ryan Richards 13 for Casey. Connor Sullivan had eight rebounds and Parcel and Nolan Clement five assists each.

Bentley Delp scored 25 points and Avery Sheets 12 for the Lions, 8-11. Marshall hosts Martinsville next Friday.

—Linton 46, Bloomfield 43 — At Linton, Jackson Miller's 3-pointer at the buzzer gave the Miners a SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference win.

Linton, 9-4 and 3-0 in the SWIAC, hosts North Daviess next Friday. Bloomfield, 7-6 and 1-3, hosts South Knox on Saturday.

Girls basketball

—Northview 50, South Putnam 31 — At Brazil, Brynlee Clark had a game-high 23 points as the Knights won for the 11th time in the past 12 games Friday.

Now 17-3 and 7-1 in the Western Indiana Conference, Northview hosts Cloverdale on Monday.

South Putnam, 10-8 and 3-5, hosts Owen Valley on Saturday.

Prep football

—Falcons hire coach — North Vermillion High School has announced the hiring of Andrew Rodriguez as its next head football coach.

Rodriguez comes to North Vermillion after serving as defensive coordinator for Class 5A power Harrison (West Lafayette).
