ROUNDUP: Neshannock High boys upset Mohawk on road

Feb. 10—The Neshannock High boys basketball team spoiled Mohawk's bid for section perfection Friday night.

Talan Anderton netted a season-high 21 points to lead the Lancers to a 69-67 WPIAL Section 1-3A road victory in overtime over the Warriors. Jake Rynd's field goal with 17 seconds to go in overtime broke a 67-67 tie and closed the scoring.

Neshannock (10-2 section, 17-3 overall) avenged a 64-52 loss to section-champion Mohawk (11-1, 15-7) earlier in the season.

Bobby Fadden poured in a season- and game-high 42 points for the Warriors. Fadden hit two free throws with 3.9 seconds remaining in regulation to knot the count at 56.

The Lancers missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the game went to overtime.

In the extra session, Anderton buried two freebies for a 65-61 Neshannock lead with 1:45 to go. Fadden answered on the other end with a bucket to close the gap to 65-63.

The Lancers turned the ball over with 1:02 to go. Jay Wrona misfired on a 3-pointer with 55 ticks to go and Neshannock got the board.

Anderton tossed in two free throws with 47.8 seconds left for a 67-63 Lancers lead. Fadden hit two free throws with 43.9 seconds left and two more with 25.7 seconds left to tie the game game at 67.

Rynd's field goal with 17 seconds left put Neshannock up by two tallies. With 4.7 seconds to go, Mohawk inbounded the ball to Fadden, who missed a shot just before the final horn and Neshannock survived.

David Kwiat delivered 13 points for the Lancers, while Rynd recorded 12 and Anthony Bonner added 11.

Keigan Hopper scored 11 points for the Warriors.

Neshannock visits Laurel at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Mohawk's regular season is complete. The Warriors will await their postseason opponent, which will be announced Monday afternoon by the WPIAL.

Ellwood City 73, Riverside 45

Joseph Roth became the Wolverines' all-time leading scorer, netting 18 points in a Section 1-3A home victory over the Panthers.

Roth overtook Dan Aloi, who scored 1,938 career points. Roth now has 1,948 points to rank seventh on the county's all-time scoring list.

Ellwood City Lincoln (9-3, 14-7) raced out to a 21-9 lead after one stanza and increased it to 42-25 at the half.

Ryan Widmaier was next with 17 for the Wolverines and Colten Crizer collected 11.

Drake Fox scored 18 points for Riverside (4-8, 8-14).

Ellwood City visits Shenango at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Union 91, Avella 68

The Scotties bounced back from a home loss to Rochester earlier in the week with a Section 1-1A road decision over the Eagles.

Union (8-2, 12-10) dropped a 53-47 decision to the Rams on Tuesday in a key section matchup.

"Going into the playoffs, this was for seeding purposes," Scotties coach Mark Stanley said. "It was a good win to get; Avella is not playing bad.

"I thought the guys came out great."

Union buried 18 3-pointers, including nine by Lucas Stanley. Grayson Blakley contributed six and Andrew Gettings tossed in three.

Stanley scored 35 points with nine rebounds and seven steals. Blakley followed with 20 tallies and Braylon Thomas posted 14 points with 11 assists. Gettings notched 10 points.

Dayne Johnke pulled down seven boards for the winners.

"They were packing in a zone and we were able to knock down some looks," Coach Stanley said. "That's about as good as we have shot it. You have to be able to knock down some shots."

This is the regular season finale for Union. The Scotties will await their WPIAL playoff opponent, which will be announced Monday afternoon.

Aliquippa 71, Shenango 31

The Wildcats fell to the Quips in a Section 1-2A road encounter.

"When you're playing Aliquippa, you can't turn it over 30 times," Shenango coach Bob McQuiston said. "We have to do a better job of what we go over, especially against physical and quick teams like Aliquippa and Northgate."

Brody McQuiston scored 13 points for the Wildcats and Joe Campoli added eight.

Brandon Banks bucketed 14 markers for Aliquippa.

Shenango hosts Ellwood City at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.

Northgate 101, Laurel 41

The Flames hit the century mark in a Section 1-2A home win over the Spartans.

Laurel (0-10, 2-19) trailed 19-7 after one quarter and 62-23 at the break. Northgate netted 43 markers in the second stanza.

Jayden Iorio scored 11 points for the Spartans and Tyler Shearer supplied nine.

Landon Lockett led Northgate (8-2, 16-4) with 24 points.

Laurel entertains Neshannock at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Sharon 80, Wilmington 25

The Greyhounds dropped a District 10, Region 5-3A/4A home verdict to the Tigers.

Jordan Mercer netted seven points for Wilmington (0-8, 0-21) and Wesley Vass-Gal added six.

Wilmington travels to Grove City at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
