ROUNDUP: Pomeroys lose conference road games

Jan. 26—Saint Mary-of-the-Woods lost a pair of River States Conference basketball games Thursday at Point Park, the men falling 77-70 after the women fell 78-71.

It was the first conference loss of the season for the SMWC men, who led 36-29 at halftime against the 21st-ranked home team.

Cobie Barnes had 21 points to lead the Pomeroys, while Greg Jenkins added 19, Chaz Birchfield 16 points and 10 rebounds and DaMeriz Merriweather 11.

Now 14-5 overall and 8-1 in the RSC, the Pomeroys will play Saturday at Shawnee State. Point Park is 19-1 and 8-1.

In the women's game, the host Pioneers had a hot fourth quarter after three periods of excellent SMWC defense that at one time had the visitors ahead by 12 points.

Brooklynn Jones led The Woods (11-8, 6-3) with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Destiny Thomas had 16 with a career-high 14 rebounds. Linton's Aubrey Burgess added 11 points.

The SMWC women also play at Shawnee State on Saturday.

Girls basketball

—Bloomington North 48, Terre Haute North 30 — At North, Becca Gore had a game-high 19 points in her final home game but the Patriots lost a Conference Indiana contest Thursday.

The Cougars wrapped up the conference championship with the win and take an 18-5 record (5-0 in conference play) into Tuesday's game at the Class 4A Mooresville Sectional.

North, which finished its regular season 7-17 and 1-4, plays Terre Haute South on Feb. 2 at the Class 4A Avon Sectional.

—West Vigo 43, North Vermillion 37 — At Cayuga, the Vikings won their second game in as many nights on Thursday to finish their regular season on a high note.

Delaney Marrs had 17 points and Hannah Stepp 16 for West Vigo, 5-18. The Vikings play Edgewood on Tuesday at the Class 3A Owen Valley Sectional.

Cadence Dunham and Lauren Ellis had 11 points each for North Vermillion, 11-12, which plays Rossville on Tuesday at the Class 3A Attica Sectional.

—Northview 45, Cloverdale 19 — At Brazil, the Knights honored senior Brooklyn Eldridge and picked up a Western Indiana Conference victory.

Now 19-3 and 8-1 in the WIC, the Knights play at Indian Creek on Friday for a share of the conference title.

Cloverdale, 2-21 and 0-10, plays Parke Heritage on Wednesday at the Class 2A South Putnam Sectional.

—Linton 54, White River Valley 34 — At Switz City, the visiting Miners wrapped up the SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference championship.

Bradie Chambers had 29 points for Linton, 16-6 and 7-0. The Miners meet North Daviess on Tuesday at the Class 2A North Knox Sectional.

WRV, 11-11 and 3-4, got 10 points from Reese Graves and plays North Central on Tuesday at the Class A Bloomfield Sectional.

—Shakamak 46, OPH 28 — At Jasonville, Elayni Stone and Aubree Langford had 11 points each Thursday as the Lakers wrapped up their regular season.

Shakamak is 16-6 going into Wednesday's game against Lighthouse Christian at the Class A Bloomfield Sectional.

—Eastern Greene 35, Clay City 27 — At Clay City, the visiting Thunderbirds wrapped up second place in the SouthWestern Indiana Athletic Conference.

Clay City, 9-14 and 1-6, has a bye into the Feb. 2 semifinal game of the Class A Bloomfield Sectional. Eastern, 13-10 and 6-1, plays South Knox on Wednesday at the Class 2A North Knox Sectional.

—Marshall 64, OPH 43 — At Hutsonville, Ill., the visiting Lions got 16 points and two blocked shots by Lynn Welborn on Tuesday, helping Marshall raise its record to 6-19 for the season.

Also for the Lions, Marlee Heighton added 10 points and six rebounds, and Zara Engledow nine points and four rebounds. Marshall plays host to Newton at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Boys basketball

—Greencastle 61, South Vermillion 50 — At Greencastle, Sam Gooch had a game-high 29 points and Caleb Evans added 14 for the winning Tiger Cubs in a nonconference game Thursday.

Luke Bush had 20 points and Dom Garzolini 18 for South Vermillion, 8-8, which hosts Shakamak on Friday.

Greencastle, 9-6, is at Tri-West on Saturday.

—Marshall 52, Paris 51 — At Newton, Ill., a last-second layup by Avery Sheets gave the Lions the win in the seventh-place game of the Little Illini Conference Tournament.

Bentley Delp had 14 points while Kaden Matzke and R.J. Mattas had 11 each for Mashall, 9-13. The Lions host Martinsville on Monday.

—Robinson 51, Mt. Carmel 48 — At Newton, Ill., the Maroons won a second straight game to finish fifth in the Little Illini Conference Tournament.

Noah Gilmore had 18 points and Duke Thompson 15 for the Maroons.
