ROUNDUP: SMWC men break school scoring record

Jan. 4—Saint Mary-of-the-Woods men's basketball broke the program's single-game scoring record for the second time this season, carving up Ohio Christian for a 110-55 men's basketball victory Wednesday.

Cobie Barnes had 26 points to pace five Pomeroys in double figures as SMWC (10-4, 4-0 River States Conference) matched the 2022-23 win total, tying the program record for wins.

SMWC's 110 points is also a new school record for a single-game. The Pomeroys shot 54.3 percent overall, hitting 38 of 70 from the field. They hit 8 of 19 from 3-point range (42.1 percent) in addition to 26 of 31 (83.9 percent) at the free throw line.

Shon Tupuola had his sixth double-double of the season and fourth in the past five games with 13 points and 14 rebounds. Greg Johnson had a season-high 18 points, sparking the Pomeroys early in the game with eight of SMWC's first 12 points.

In other men's college basketball from Wednesday:

—Franklin 64, Rose-Hulman 61 — At Franklin, the visiting Engineers came up short in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game.

Miles McGowen had 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Engineers, while Cole Pride had 14 points, Rocco Richie 12 and Kobe Stoudemire 10.

A layup by Bradley Harden cut the lead to 62-61 with five seconds left, but the Grizzlies clinched the game at the foul line.

Rose is now 3-9 overall, 1-4 in the HCAC, and plays Saturday at Defiance.

Women's basketball

—Ohio Christian 77, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods 72 — At the Knoerle Center, the Pomeroys erased a 14-point third-quarter deficit to take a fourth-quarter lead, only to fall at the end Wednesday.

Irye Gomez had all 15 of her points in the second half for SMWC.

Girls basketball

—Terre Haute North 66, South Vermillion 8 — At North, Becca Gore led all scorers with 17 points Wednesday as the Patriots celebrated Senior Night.

The Patriots have won three of four games are are now 5-14 heading into Saturday's game at Southport.

South Vermillion, 0-16, hosted North Central on Thursday.

—Northview 62, Edgewood 39 — At Ellettsville, the visiting Knights remained in contention in the Western Indiana Conference with a big win Wednesday.

Brynlee Clarke had 23 points, Brenna Stallcop 17 and Reagin White 13 for Northview, now 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the WIC.

Northview hosts Greencastle on Friday while the Mustangs, 9-7 and 5-3, will be at Brown County that night.

Boys basketball

—Marshall 68, OPH 58 — At Marshall, Ill., the Lions defeated Oblong-Palestine-Hutsonville in a nonconference game Wednesday.

Bentley Delp had 22 points, Payton McGuire 20 and R.J. Mattas 14 for the Lions, now 7-8. Marshall hosts Olney on Friday.

OPH, 5-10, will travel to Red Hill on Tuesday.
