ROUNDUP: SMWC men knock off team guided by their former coach

Jan. 29—Cobie Barnes led four Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College players in double figures with 25 points as the Pomeroys beat the team guided by their previous coach, Shawnee State, by an 80-77 score in River States Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon inside Waller Gymnasium.

Keith Germain had 25 points for Shawnee State, coached by former SMWC boss Mike Hunter.

The Woods (15-5 overall, 9-1 RSC) will visit Brescia in Owensboro, Ky., on Tuesday. Shawnee State dropped to 14-6 and 8-2, respectively.

In other men's basketball Saturday afternoon:

—Transylvania 76, Rose-Hulman 70 — At Lexington, Ky., Rose-Hulman lost to one of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference co-leaders inside Clive M. Beck Center.

Kobe Stoudemire led the Engineers with 26 points.

The Engineers (8-11 overall, 6-6 HCAC) will visit Anderson, the other HCAC co-leader, on Wednesday night for a 7:30 matchup.

—Swope honored — Indiana State men's basketball junior Isaiah Swope was named Missouri Valley Newcomer of the Week on Monday. It was Swope's first weekly honor as a Sycamore.

Swope averaged 24.5 points, 4 rebounds and 3.5 assists in ISU's 2-0 week in Valley play.

Women's basketball

—Saint Mary-of-the-Woods 63, Shawnee State 60 — At Portsmouth, Ohio, Madison Fueger and Brooklynn Jones tallied 26 and 20 points respectively to lead the visiting Pomeroys to a River States Conference victory Saturday afternoon inside Waller Gymnasium.

SMWC (12-8 overall, 7-3 RSC) will travel to Brescia in Owensboro, Ky., on Tuesday.

—Transylvania 83, Rose-Hulman 37 — At Lexington, Ky., the undefeated Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference-leading Pioneers put a stop to Rose's modest three-game winning streak Saturday afternoon inside Clive M. Beck Center.

Rose-Hulman got team highs of 13 points and five rebounds from 6-foot-2 freshman reserve Grace Roland.

Rose (10-9 overall, 7-5 HCAC) will play host to Anderson at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hulbert Arena.

Boys basketball

—South Vermillion 66, Shakamak 61 — At Clinton, Luke Bush, Brayson Shoults and Dylan Conder poured in 16, 14 and 12 points respectively as the host Wildcats held off the Lakers on Friday.

Top scorers for Shakamak were J.T. May and Linden Jenkins with 18 points apiece and Jad Johnson with 14.

South Vermillion, which improved to 9-8 for the season, will play host to North Vermillion on Thursday.

—Linton 65, North Knox 31 — At Linton, Paul Oliver and Conner Daily scored 19 points each, and the host Miners roared to a 38-13 halftime lead to help secure the victory on Saturday.

Linton (13-4) plays at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at White River Valley.

Girls basketball

—Parke Heritage 62, Attica 23 — At Rockville, the host Wolves chalked up their 20th victory in their final game of the regular season and clinched the Wabash River Conference outright championship Saturday afternoon.

Parke Heritage junior guard Emma Simpson led all scorers with 17 points, while teammates Adilee Jenkins and Andrea Perkins contributed 13 and 10 respectively.

Parke Heritage (20-3 overall, 7-0 WRC) will try to extend its winning streak to 14 games when it faces Cloverdale (2-21) at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Class 2A South Putnam Sectional.

—Peoria Notre Dame 71, Paris 47 — At Peoria, Ill., the visiting Tigers got 14 points from freshman guard Kailey Young, but the victorious Fighting Irish responded with three double-digit scorers in Saturday action.

Peoria (24-4) was led by Mya Wardle's 19 points, Elly Bare's 17 and Julia Mingus' 16. Paris fell behind 28-7 after one quarter, then played Notre Dame fairly even at 43-40 the rest of the way.

The Tigers were coming off a 54-45 loss at Mt. Carmel on Thursday, when Kilee Edwards scored 12 points and Taylor Clark 11. Paris (15-11) plays host to Robinson at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Women's swimming

—Parsons shatters ISU's 1,000 freestyle mark — At South Bend, Claire Parsons set the Indiana State mark in the 1,000-yard freestyle to highlight the final day of competition at the 2024 Tim Welsh Classic as the Sycamores wrapped up the event at the Rolfs Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon.

Parsons (10 minutes, 5.26 seconds) took three seconds off the previous mark set by ISU alum Paraskevi Kritkou back in 2018 to highlight the third individual Sycamore record the Terre Haute native has set in her inaugural campaign in the Blue & White.

Overall, the Sycamores posted 15 top-10 finishes Saturday, running their weekend total to 32 at the annual event conducted by Notre Dame.

Ohio State took home the team title with a two-day score 1,635. Akron was second in 821, while Notre Dame (820) and ISU (545) rounded out the field.

The Sycamores will close out the regular season Friday, welcoming Illinois State to the Vigo County Aquatic Center for a dual meet at 7 p.m.

College track & field

—ISU pole vaulter matches record — Indiana State's Will Staggs matched his own indoor program record in the pole vault at the Michigan Invitational, headlining 14 top-three finishes for the Sycamore men's and women's teams on Saturday at the U-M Indoor Track Building at Ann Arbor.

Staggs cleared 17 feet, 9 inches to set the meet record in the event. Also finishing with firsts for ISU were Casey Hood Jr. in the 60-meter dashy, Kevin Krutsch (high jump) and Shomari Rogers-Walton (triple jump).
