ROUNDUP: Swarens earns All-American status in men's shot put

Mar. 9—University of Wisconsin redshirt senior Jason Swarens, a former Terre Haute South High School multi-sport standout, became a first-team All-American following his fourth-place finish in the men's shot put during the NCAA Division I indoor track and field championships Saturday.

Swarens' mark of 65 feet, 2 1/4 inches was his second best of the season, propelling him to his first career All-American honors indoors.

The meet took place at The TRACK at New Balance facility.

The Badgers will kick off their outdoor season March 23 at the Lurline Struppeck Invitational, hosted by LSU.

—Hobbs 3rd in D-III nationals — At Virginia Beach, Va., Rose-Hulman senior Jailen Hobbs earned All-American honors with a third-place finish in the men's 60-meter dash during the NCAA Division III indoor championships Saturday afternoon.

Hobbs ran a school-record time of 6.74 seconds in the finals to bring home third place behind a pair of runners from UW-La Crosse and UW-Oshkosh.

He is the 58th All-American in Rose track and field history and his third-place finish is the highest finish in a nationals for an Engineer since Liz Evans in 2013.

The All-American award for Hobbs is the fifth of his career. He is just the fifth Rose-Hulman athlete to earn five All-American honors, joining Evans, Andrew Schipper, Ellie Hong and Sutton Coleman.

College softball

—Notre Dame 11, Indiana State 9 — At Huntington, W.Va., Indiana State fought hard, but fell to Notre Dame by two runs in Saturday's game at the Marshall March Madness.

The Sycamores made a huge comeback, but could not hold on.

The Fighting Irish scored two runs in the first inning to take the lead early and added to it in the second with home runs by Jane Kronenberger and Carlli Kloss, advancing the score to 6-0.

But Indiana State tied the score with six runs in the four when Hannah Welch walked with the bases loaded, Abi Chipps and Danielle Henning each singled in a run and Isabella Henning followed with a three-run double.

Notre Dame took the lead back at 7-6 in the fourth when it scored on an RBI single by Karina Gaskins. Then Notre Dame scored three more runs in the fifth to advance its lead to 10-6.

The Sycamores rallied again in the sixth, scoring three runs to cut their deficit to 10-9. Indiana State got hits by Isabella Henning, Kennedy Shade, Abby Robakowski, Kenzie Cornwell and Lauren Marsicek in Inning 6.

Isabella Henning led the Sycamores overall, going 3 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs.

Megan Asher started in the circle for ISU, allowing seven hits and six runs scored. Lauren Sackett took over in the second, striking out three batters while allowing zero hits and zero runs scored. Cassi Newbanks (6-6) took the loss. She went the final 3.0 innings, allowing six hits and five runs.

The Sycamores (11-11) will play one final Marshall March Madness game at 1:30 p.m. EDT Sunday against Marshall. It will be livestreamed on ESPN+.

Men's volleyball

—Indiana Tech 3, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods 0 — At Fort Wayne, SMWC dropped the first two sets against NAIA No. 15-ranked Indiana Tech on Saturday afternoon before leading most of the way in the decisive third set and falling to the Warriors by scores of 25-16, 25-16, 27-25.

Manease Fetulimoeata led the Pomeroys with 14 kills and Yammiel Martinez tallied seven. Martinez used an accurate attack in the contest as he posted a tremendous hitting percentage of .583. Connor Orrock was credited with a match-high 13 assists, while Brycen Yadao tallied a pair of service aces.

In the third set, The Woods scored the first five points capped by a Martinez kill. A Julian Green kill staked the Pomeroys to a 17-14 advantage, but the Warriors countered with four rallies in a row before Joey Anderson recorded a kill to level the tally at 18. Saint Mary-of-the-Woods would benefit from a Warriors service error to take a 24-23 lead, but the Warriors evened the score at 25 and went on to score the final two points of the match.

St. Mary-of-the-Woods fell to 11-7 overall and 2-5 in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference, while Indiana Tech improved to 14-1 and 5-1 respectively.

The Pomeroys will visit Maranatha Baptist University in Watertown, Wis., on Tuesday.
