ROUNDUP: Union high boys basketball team falls to Quaker Valley

Dec. 15—The Union High boys basketball team came up short Thursday night.

The Scotties were outscored by 14 points in the middle two quarters in dropping a 67-56 WPIAL nonsection home matchup to Quaker Valley.

The Quakers outscored Union, 35-21, in the second and third quarters combined.

Union (1-4) trailed 17-16 after one quarter. Quaker Valley (3-2) pushed the lead to 35-26 at halftime and 52-37 after three stanzas.

"We fell behind and they hit a shot at the end of the half to make it a nine-point lead," Scotties coach Mark Stanley said. "They stretched it out in the third quarter.

"We cut it to eight in the fourth quarter with the ball, but, we couldn't convert. We have to improve defensively."

Braylon Thomas scored 15 points to lead Union, while Lucas Stanley and Grayson Blakley recorded 12 each. Stanley added six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Dayne Johnke pulled down seven boards.

Union hosts Avonworth at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

General McLane 69,

Wilmington 9

General McLane brought an explosive first quarter to defeat Wilmington in nonregion action. The Lancers posted 31 points in the first to Wilmington's five.

General McLane continued the offensive pressure in the second quarter to enter halftime with a 46-7 advantage.

The Greyhounds (0-7) fell flat in the third quarter and were outscored 15-0. Landon Kline paced Wilmington with four points.

Wilmington hosts Portersville Christian at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Girls

Hampton 71,

New Castle 27

The Lady 'Canes started slow and couldn't recover in dropping a road decision to the host Lady Talbots in WPIAL Section 2-5A action.

"We knew taking care of the ball was key for us," New Castle coach Kara DiNardo-Joseph said. "We started out slow and we reverted back to the mistakes.

"As the game wore on, we did clean that stuff up. We have to take care of the ball and get better each time we're out on the court."

The Lady 'Canes (0-1 section, 0-6 overall) trailed 20-6 after one quarter and 35-13 at the half.

Rihanna Boice paced the Lady 'Canes with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

New Castle visits Hopewell at 6:30 p.m. Friday.

Burgettstown 45,

Laurel 19

The Lady Spartans dropped a nonsection decision to the Lady Blue Devils.

Laurel (2-4) trailed 10-4 after one period and 25-4 at the break.

Shyan Tindall, Morgan Barker and Jayme Weisenstein scored three points each for the Lady Spartans.

Kaitlyn Nease netted 17 points for Burgettstown (4-2).

Laurel squares off against Sharpsville at 6 p.m. Thursday on the road.

Seneca Valley 56,

Neshannock 24

The Lady Lancers were outscored 19-3 in the second quarter in a nonsection home loss to the Lady Raiders.

Neshannock (3-3) trailed 14-8 after one quarter and 33-11 at the half.

"Their physicality was tough for us to match tonight," Lady Lancers coach Luann Grybowski said. "The kids played hard and gave it their best effort.

"We have to work every day on fundamentals and getting better. The little stuff has to get better in order for us to get better."

Neshannock returns to action at 7:30 p.m. Monday when it visits Allderdice.

Rochester 62,

Shenango 26

The Lady Wildcats fell short in their 1-2A opener to the Lady Rams. Rochester managed to get a quick lead over Shenango and never relinquished it.

"I thought our effort was really good, but right now it's lack of execution," Shenango coach Ricci LaRocco said of the loss. "We're working on it. I thought we showed flashes of playing well. At the same time, the score is what it is. If they continue to give that type of effort we're going to get better and turn this around."

Rochester (1-0, 3-2) jumped out to a 15-9 lead over Shenango (0-1, 1-3) in the first quarter. The Lady Rams entered halftime with 20-point lead over Shenango.

Shenango's Ella Ferrell netted eight points to pace her team.

Shenango only produced 13 points in the second half to Rochester's 29.

The Lady 'Cats will host section rival Freedom at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Wilmington 66,

Sharpsville 27

The Lady Greyhounds picked up its first District 10, Region 4-3A/4A win over Sharpsville courtesy of contributions from Maya Jeckavitch and Lia Krarup.

Jeckavitch led Wilmington with 18 points, while Krarup posted 16. This was Krarup's first game back after suffering a minor injury.

"That was a great team victory. The energy for our first home game of the season, not only our first home game but region game, I thought it was electric. The girls were extremely unselfish," Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said. "When you have girls that can score, it's easy to play your style of game. We hope this can propel us heading into the Christmas tournament. It was good having Lia back. The girls feed off of her presence."

Wilmington got on the offensive quick in the first quarter and netted 16 points while holding Sharpsville to three. The Lady Greyhounds took a 35-9 lead at halftime.

Wilmington's best quarter came in the third after scoring 24 points to the Lady Blue Devils' 10.

Oil City will host the Lady Greyhounds at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
