Roy Hodgson interested on return to football with Crystal Palace following Sam Allardyce resignation

Roy Hodgson would be interested in speaking to Crystal Palace if he is approached over their manager’s job following Sam Allardyce’s decision to quit and retire from football.

Telegraph Sport understands that Hodgson did talk to Palace last December following the sacking of Alan Pardew and before Allardyce was appointed.

At that time Palace preferred to go with Allardyce who saved them from relegation but told chairman Steve Parish that he wanted to resign at a meeting on Tuesday.

Allardyce has since issued a statement indicating he will not carry on in management and wanted to enjoy his retirement. If the 62-year-old takes a job within the next two years then substantial compensation will be due to Palace.

Palace are still reeling from the shock of Allardyce’s sudden departure but are determined to take their time before appointing his successor. Given he has gone so soon after the end of the season then Palace believe there is no rush and they can properly assess their options and see who is interested.

Next Crystal Palace manager

The club have already been inundated with agents claiming to represent managers interested in the job including the former Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini. Marco Silva, who is expected to inform Hull City that he is leaving following their relegation to the Championship, which was sealed with their defeat away to Palace, is of interest to Palace and a number of other clubs.

Watford have already made contact with Silva’s representatives and the Portuguese has also held talks with Porto. It had been claimed that he had reached agreement to take over at Porto but according to sources close to him he is still looking at his options.

Hodgson has been out-of-work since leaving the England job – where he was succeeded, albeit briefly by Allardyce – following the Euro 2016 debacle but has made it clear that he would be interested in returning to football at some level either in England or overseas.

The 69-year-old held talks with Leicester City following the sacking of Claudio Ranieri but they decided to go with Craig Shakespeare at that time. Shakespeare is hoping to secure the job on a permanent basis having guided Leicester to safety.

Hodgson is believed to be open-minded as to what kind of job he would take – either as a coach or manager or in a technical capacity – and at what level.

He attended the League Managers Association awards on Monday and made it clear then he wanted to continue working. "I am not after a job but at the same time, I am not looking to turn down jobs," Hodgson said.

“I am in a happy situation that if one day someone comes to me and says 'we would like you to take on this job' and I like the idea of it, then I would be more than happy to do it."
