Roy Keane was left fuming with Andy Robertson last night, although there might be more to his ire than just the Liverpool star’s performance for Scotland.

The former Manchester United captain didn’t hold back in his assessment of Robertson after Scotland was thrashed 5-1 by Germany in the opening game of Euro 2024. The defeat already leaves the Scots fighting to stay in the tournament, with goal difference likely to have a big impact on their chances of reaching the knockout stages.

After the game, Robertson faced up to the TV cameras to address his side’s performance. "First half, we just got it all wrong really, didn't show up, weren't aggressive enough, and we let good players get on the ball," he admitted. "Second half, we're down to 10 men and I thought lads dug in really well.”

His comments though weren’t met well by Keane, who laid into the Scotland captain while working as a pundit for ITV.

"Andy Robertson spoke at the end of the game and said they had a 'game plan'," he pointed out. "It's all well and good having a plan, he said then 'We weren't aggressive enough'. You have to be aggressive in a game of football. Being up against opposition who are much stronger than you, being aggressive is part of a footballer.

"I love watching skilful players, absolutely love it and the talent we saw from the German players tonight was great to watch. But my goodness, when you are playing football at this level, you've got to hit people. Hit them properly, hit them aggressively and do it in the right way.

"If you step off against them like Scotland did tonight... and it's no good talking after the game saying 'We had a game plan'... it's rubbish! Andy Robertson, it's all just rubbish coming out. You knew before the game what was at stake and after the game it's no good going, 'We'll regroup and we'll be angry tomorrow.' No, you should be angry for a long time.”

It’s not the first time that Keane has targeted Robertson, and he went a little more personal with his attack on the Liverpool star following a bizarre incident last year.

Robertson was caught by an elbow from assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis at half-time of Liverpool’s game against Arsenal at Anfield last season, leaving the defender and his teammates stunned. Keane though was rather less sympathetic.

"Do you know what it is, that Robertson? I've watched him a number of times. He's a big baby. That's what he is. Just get on with the game and concentrate on your defending,” Keane said.

Liverpool.com says: Robertson just had the misfortune of being Scotland captain and having to be the one to face up to the cameras last night. There wasn’t a single player for his side that could hold their head up high after that performance.

Keane’s criticism is harsh to say the least. Robertson was just saying what any other player would have said in that situation, and probably what Keane would have said himself during his playing days.

The former United captain clearly has a grudge against Robertson, judging by his previous comments. Hopefully the Liverpool star can make him eat his words, although Scotland doesn’t look like it will be staying too long at the Euros.
