Roy Keane reignites Andy Robertson war-of-words as Liverpool 'prepare' Ederson transfer

The European Championships got underway on Friday night while the summer transfer window opened for Liverpool.

Club football will take a backseat for the next month as the tournament takes centre stage with several Reds stars looking to write themselves into their respective countries' folklore.

Hungary and Dominik Szoboszlai will be in action today when they take on Switzerland in Group A. The competition's curtain was raised on Friday when Scotland took on host nation Germany in Munich but it was a night to forget for the Tartan Army as Die Mannschaft inflicted a record-breaking defeat at the Allianz Arena.

Andy Robertson captained Scotland but it wasn't to be as a memorable night quickly turned into one to forget. Germany hit Steve Clarke's side for five after finding themselves three-down and a man down, following Ryan Porteous' straight red card, at half-time.

With that said, ECHO Sport has taken a look at the latest Liverpool news and gossip that has been doing the rounds in the last 24 hours.

Roy Keane reignites Andy Robertson feud in latest war-of-words instalment

Roy Keane criticised Liverpool full-back Robertson following his comments in light of their 5-1 defeat to Germany on Friday. The former Manchester United midfielder took umbrage with the Scot's post-match interview where the 30-year-old highlighted their lack of aggression.

"Andy Robertson said about a gameplan, it's well and good having a plan, and they weren't aggressive enough, you have to be aggressive in a game of football," said Keane.

"When you're against opposition who are so much stronger than you, being aggressive is part of it. I love watching skilful players and the talent of the German player - it was great to watch but my goodness, you've got to hit people [smacks hands]. Do it in the right way," he continued.

"It's no good talking after the game, 'we had a game plan' it's rubbish, Andy Robertson is just rubbish coming out. You knew before the game what was at stake, you'll be angry tomorrow, no you should be angry all the time. They're talking about creating history, they're creating history alright by playing as bad as that, letting their manager and supporters down. Football's a physical game, they didn't lay a glove on them."

ECHO says: This isn't the first time that Keane has taken aim at the Liverpool full-back with the Irishman calling Robertson a "baby" following his comments during the 2022/23 campaign. While elements of what Keane has said are justified and true, it feels harsh taking aim at the Scotland skipper who has fronted the responsibility to discuss a stinging defeat. There was a lot wrong with the Scotland performance at the Allianz Arena, where the Liverpool defender struggled, but the buck ultimately falls with the rest of the squad and Porteous for his rash challenge on the stroke of half-time.

Liverpool 'preparing' Ederson offer

Liverpool are said to be preparing an offer for Atalanta midfielder Ederson, according to Tutto Atalanta.

The Reds have been frequently linked with the Brazilian midfielder, who only joined the Italian side in 2022, but clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain are also said to be in the hunt.

The report claims that Liverpool have made contact in a bid to learn more information on the prospect of landing his signature. The latest development suggests that officials at Anfield are preparing an offer of around £37.7million.

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini has previously admitted that it would be difficult keeping hold of the 24-year-old, with the Bergamo club valuing the midfielder in the region of €45million (£38m).

He said: "Keeping a player like Ederson in Bergamo would mean maintaining an international level talent. We hope to succeed, even if it is always a challenge for us to keep players in such high demand."

ECHO says: The midfield is a position that has become one of increasing importance in recent seasons. With the departure of Thiago, the Reds are short in that department and it would be unfair to heap reliance on Wataru Endo with the Japanese international turning 32 in February, who is set for his heaviest workload of games after qualification for the Champions League. For a midfielder who starred in a Europa League triumph and is seemingly worth below £40million, signing Ederson now could be a real coup for the club and fits into the Fenway Sports Group parameters for transfer targets.
