Ruben Amorim responds to Jose Mourinho talk amid Liverpool manager links

Sporting CP manager Ruben Amorim has shrugged off comparisons with Jose Mourinho.

The 39-year-old has been strongly tipped with a move to Liverpool after reported target Xabi Alonso confirmed he will remain at Bayer Leverkusen next season.

Amorim has emerged as one of the most impressive young managers in the European game since moving to the Lisbon giants from Braga and a big move to a leading club has been predicted.

He delivered Sporting their first League title in 19 years during his first season in charge and could yet lift the trophy again this time around, with his team sitting a point clear of eternal rivals Benfica at the top of the table ahead of a derby between the two next weekend.

As such, Amorim has drawn comparison with Mourinho, who shot to prominence with Porto before going on to make a huge impact at some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

Labelled “The Special One 2.0” by some, the Sporting boss distanced himself from the tag.

“It has nothing to do with it, it makes no sense and I have no illusions about it,” he said.

“I still remember last year everyone was speculating about whether I was going to leave Sporting. There are no comparisons between the great José Mourinho and the Sporting coach.”

Last week, Amorim insisted he only add eyes for the Sporting job despite so many links with a move to Anfield.

“Right now I’m just focused on Sporting," he told reporters on Friday night.

"I am very proud to be Sporting’s manager. I have a contract, and even more importantly than that, I’m very happy here. My focus is on beating Benfica."
