Danny Cipriani was sent off in Gloucester’s Champions Cup match at Munster, sparking even more questions about the inconsistency of the implementation of new guidelines which have been brought in to prevent head injuries and concussions.

Fly-half Cipriani, who was discarded by England coach Eddie Jones for the autumn internationals, was dismissed for a shoulder barge on Munster Rory Scannel’s head.

The Gloucester man did not appear to make too much contact and the Ireland international was uninjured, but officials felt they had no option but to issue the red card, as a zero-tolerance policy has been put in place by rugby’s governing body.

Cipriani, who is the Gallagher Premiership player of the month, knew he was off the pitch as soon as the incident was referred to the TMO and he apologised to Scannel as he left the pitch.
