Buffalo Sabres development camp invite Michael Campoli was stretchered off the ice after being hit into the boards by William Carrier during a 3-on-3 drill.

According to Buffalo Hockey Beat, the 18-year-old Campoli tried to skate off the ice before falling down and then staying motionless for 20 minutes.

The Sabres invited Campoli, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound defenseman, from the U.S. National Under-18 Team. He is committed to play college hockey at Boston College.

Campoli was eventually placed on a board and wheeled off the ice in an upright position as the 1,000 or so fans, who had stayed silent, erupted in applause. He was transported by ambulance to a local hospital.

Sabres general manager Tim Murray indicated Campoli was aware of his surroundings and had some movement.

“He was obviously speaking and joking a little bit and he was moving his extremities a little bit,” Murray said.

Both Murray and Carrier said they believed it was a clean check on Campoli.

“I think he just lost balance,” Carrier said. “I think he went backwards. I think he hit his head, tried to get up and hit his head again.”

UPDATE: The Sabres said Campoli has been released from the hospital and is “doing well.” Campoli thanked people for the well wishes.
