Everton manager Sam Allardyce will be the most notable absentee when the club head to Cyprus to complete their Europa League schedule.

Allardyce is to remain on Merseyside while his assistant Craig Shakespeare and first team coach Duncan Ferguson take charge of a line-up of fringe players and youngsters.

The newly appointed manager made it known over the weekend where the competition stands in his list of priorities, especially with the Merseyside derby upcoming this weekend.

For Everton to go into the final game with Apollon Limassol without their boss offers a symbolic end to what has been a campaign to forget, the return to European football turning into a nightmare.

The Merseysiders play their final group game on Thursday evening and have already been eliminated.

Allardyce has already stated his senior players will miss the trip. Neither side can qualify, so there is unlikely to be any objection from the other clubs in Group E. The result will have no impact as both Atalanta and Lyon are already through to the knockout stage.

“It is a dead rubber,” said Allardyce earlier this week.

“I would suggest to the fans that if you are going to spend some money to go and watch them be mindful that I am going to send a team that is not going to be risking too many players who are going to be involved for Liverpool. It would be foolish of me to consider getting a player injured in that game and not have him available. I have too many injuries already.”
