Chelsea are in talks with Atletico Madrid over a possible move for striker Samu Omorodion, football.london understands. The Blues have started the summer transfer window by pushing for a new centre-forward to bolster Enzo Maresca's side.

Jhon Duran had been identified as a possible target and talks were held with Aston Villa. However, football.london understands that the Colombian's wage demands were too high and alternatives are now being considered.

The idea of a £34m move has been touted by the Blues' hierarchy but the La Liga side are eager to renew the 20-year-old's contract after his impressive loan move with Alaves.

Maresca is keen to add another striker to his squad before the start of the 2024/25 campaign. Nicolas Jackson is currently the only stand-out forward at the club and there's hope to take some of the pressure off his shoulders.

Omorodion joins the lengthy list of strikers linked with a move to west London this summer. Victor Osimhen, Victor Gyokeres, Dusan Vlahovic, Ivan Toney and Benjamin Sesko have been on that list but no move has materialised.

Chelsea have already signed one player this window with Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo joining on a free transfer. Further business is expected to occur between now and the start of the season and a new centre-forward seems the priority.

Here, football.london brings you all you need to know about Omorodion and his career so far.

Who is Samu Omorodion?

The striker was born in Melilla to Nigerian parents in May 2004. After moving to Seville at a young age, he joined Granada's youth set-up in 2021. Not long later, he made his senior debut for the club's reserve team in a 2-1 home defeat to Marchamalo.

His first full season (22/23) saw him flourish in senior football for the first time with 18 goals and 33 games, representing the Spain Under-19s throughout. His goals, including one in the 2-0 play-off final win over Real Aviles, helped Granada's B team earn promotion to the third tier.

In August 2023, Omorodion made his first team and La Liga debut for Grenada against Atletico Madrid, scoring in the 3-1 defeat. A week later, he signed for Diego Simeone's side on a five-year contract.

Omorodion was immediately loaned out to La Liga side Alaves until the end of the season. He missed just two league games, scoring nine goals.

Why do Chelsea want to sign him?

Well, the most obvious and blatant reason Chelsea are targeting the youngster is his eye for goal. Nine goals in his first full campaign in Europe's top five divisions is a decent start but his tall, athletic frame makes him an attractive asset.

A strong and quick No.9, Omorodion ticks the boxes for exactly what Chelsea need in attack to add competition to Jackson. However, they fear overpaying for another unproven striker.

Omorodion has also been the subject of enquiries from West Ham and Nottingham Forest this window. The 6ft 4in attacker is also attracting interest from Roma, AC Milan and Napoli.
