General comments

Running shoes have become more and more specific. You can now buy specialist mile kicks from New Balance, and a couple of years ago Hoka bought out a shoe designed especially for downhill running. That’s all well and good, if you have deep pockets and a big wardrobe. But sometimes it’s better off putting your faith in a shoe that can do everything well. The Saucony Ride 14 is that shoe.

Great updates

The Ride is Saucony’s flagship neutral shoe, but this latest iteration gets some welcome updates. The most notable is the reduction in weight, which makes these shoes feel light and fast underfoot. It also comes with a more breathable mesh, resulting in a cooler more comfortable ride. It’s not a featherweight racing flat – it comes in a 266g for men and 224g for women – but it’s a shoe that feels as at home on a tempo run as it does a Sunday morning plod.

Comfort and fit

The Ride 14 is an impressively comfortable shoe, packing in a decent amount of Saucony’s PWRRUN cushioning into a lightweight package. This cushioning has that just-right softness that makes the shoe feel responsive but not overly harsh underfoot. There’s also an ample amount of room in the forefoot, allowing toes to splay naturally. The laces are plush and, in our experience, stay securely tied. There’s nothing too fancy here; rather it’s an understated shoe that can do a variety of things well.

Decent value

While there are benefits to running in a variety of shoes – including some evidence that doing so reduces the chance of injury – there’s also no doubt that some runners are simply looking to purchase one shoe for all their running needs. Given that the Ride 14 fits this description, its price-tag of £125 feels like decent value to us.

Unremarkable looks

The Ride 14 will not be winning any fashion awards. In both its blue and its pink colourways, it’s not a shoe you’d happily wear outside of a running context. Yet in many ways, its unremarkable looks are in keeping with shoe that favours substance over style.

Conclusion

We’re seriously impressed with this versatile, comfortable and affordable shoe. For newbies, or those looking for an all-round workhorse of a shoe in a lightweight package, the Ride 14 delivers in spades.
