Schilreff goes for 42 in Byng boys win

Feb. 6—BYNG — Senior Malachi Schilreff arguably turned in his best overall performance of the season to help the Byng Pirates knock off Plainview 80-57 on Senior Night Friday inside the Bill Koller Fieldhouse.

The Pirates, ranked No. 19 in Class 4A, improved to 14-7 on the year, while Plainview dropped to 9-11. Byng has now won four straight games and seven of its past eight outings.

"We did a good job at moving the ball offensively. Defensively, we were able to get out and pressure, in order to force turnovers. That allowed us to play in transition quite a bit," first-year Byng head coach Jared Gambrel told The Ada News. "I was very proud of how hard we played on both ends. We love to share the ball and every one of our guys loves to sit down and guard on the defensive end."

In the girls' contest, Byng senior Alona Cooper tried to carry her team to victory, but the Lady Pirates couldn't quite make enough shots down the stretch in a 42-36 loss to the Lady Indians.

The Lady Pirates slipped to 12-9 on the season, while Plainview left town at 17-3. After starting the season at 2-2, Plainview has now won 15 of its past 16 contests.

Byng Girls head coach Luke Clark said there were plenty of positive things to take away from the game despite his team watching a seven-point lead in the fourth quarter evaporate.

"I am so proud of our team. We guarded extremely well and made everything that Plainview got difficult. Plainview is an extremely good defensive team, and they made our offense a struggle, but we did the same to them," he said. " We just couldn't find a way to close the door on them. Overall, I am very pleased."

The Byng teams headed to Tecumseh Monday night for a pair of makeup games and are set to host Marietta tonight. The Pirate crew are at home again Friday night when Madill comes to town to end a busy week.

Schilreff exploded for a season-high 42 points to lead the Pirates. His big night also included 10 steals and seven rebounds (six on the offensive end). He shot 58 percent from the field and finished 5-of-10 from 3-point territory.

"He played a phenomenal game. He's such a great player. He just has a little bit of everything," Gambrel said. "He makes such an impact not only on the offensive end but the defensive end as well. He had an insane stat line that shows the amount of different ways he can impact the game."

Byng couldn't shake Plainview in the early going, leading just 17-16 after one quarter. But the Pirates put together a 22-9 run in the second period to grab a 39-25 lead at the break. Byng kept padding its advantage in the second half, outscoring the Indians 41-32 over the final two frames.

No other BHS player hit double figures.

GIRLS

Plainview 42, Byng 36

Byng held a 32-25 lead in the fourth quarter before Plainview stormed back. The Lady Indians finished the game on a pivotal 17-4 run.

Trailing 36-35, Cooper — who led all scorers with 25 points — stole the ball and raced toward the basket. She tried to knife through a pair of Plainview defenders for a layup and appeared to draw contact, but no foul was called.

The Lady Indians then went 4-of-4 from the free-throw line in the final nine seconds to preserve the comeback victory.

Byng led 13-9 after the first quarter, but the Lady Indians outscored the hosts 13-5 in the second period to take a 22-18 lead at halftime. Byng then used a 14-3 surge in the third period to regain the momentum heading into the fourth period.

Cooper drilled five 3-pointers in the contest. No other BHS player scored more than three points for the Lady Pirates.

Emilee Hedger led Plainview with 17 points. Marya Southerland followed with 12 points and hit a pair of 3-point baskets.
