Cristiano Ronaldo put Portugal in the first ever UEFA Nations League final with an incredible hat-trick to beat Switzerland in Porto.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner will lead his team out again at the Estádio do Dragão on Sunday against the winner of the second semi-final between England and Netherlands.

After giving his side the lead in the first half, a controversial Switzerland penalty in the second half levelled the scores.

However, with extra time looming, the Juventus man scored twice more to send Portugal into the inaugural Nations League final.

Ronaldo’s first came via a trademark free kick just 25 minutes in.

After the referee awarded a soft foul on the edge of the penalty area, Ronaldo needed little invitation to take advantage.

The man himself stepped up to rocket home a rocket of a shot past a static Yann Sommer into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

Portugal led going into the break but 6 minutes into the second half, chaos ensued as referee Felix Brych appeared to awarded Portugal a penalty, but following VAR consultation, instead ending up giving Switzerland a spot kick for a foul committed just moments earlier.

Ricardo Rodriguez made no mistake from twelve yards, despite the confusion and anger of many in the stadium.

Switzerland were in the ascendancy for much of the second half but with just two minutes left on the clock, a Bernardo Silva cross from the right found Ronaldo on the edge of the box to drill into the bottom corner.

Ronaldo wasn’t finished however, and sealed a remarkable 53rd career hat-trick following a run from the left before cutting inside and curling a pinpoint strike past the outstretched hand of Sommer.

Portugal and Ronaldo will be looking to make home advantage pay once in Sunday’s showpiece final.
