Sergio Aguero’s strike sent Manchester City back to the top of the Premier League.

Manchester City took another step towards retaining the Premier League title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Burnley.

The result sees City return back to the top of the league, after Liverpool had overtaken them on Friday night, and means they are two wins away from being named champions.

Sergio Aguero’s goal on 63 minutes proved enough for Pep Guardiola’s dominant City side at Turf Moor, with goal-line technology confirming his shot was 25mm over the line.

Burnley’s Premier League status was confirmed with Cardiff’s defeat at Fulham on Saturday and they failed to muster a single shot on target.

AS IT HAPPENED: Burnley 0-1 Man City

City dominated possession and territory in the first half, but such was the mass of bodies back they struggled to create chances.

And the first real opening looked set to fall Burnley’s way midway through the opening period. Chris Wood was played through on goal, however a poor touch saw the ball squirm away from him and Ederson was quickly off his line to smother the ball.

Bernardo shot straight at Tom Heaton, David Silva saw an effort blocked by James Tarkowski and Sergio Aguero fizzed an effort over the bar from range as the tension at Turf Moor continued to rise, unsurprising given what was at stake.

City dominated the game but found a determined defence in their way

Clearly fired up by Guardiola’s half-time words, City had numerous chances in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. Aguero’s low drive was pushed away from the near post by Heaton, who then produced a fantastic reaction save to keep out Bernardo’s fierce volleyball from inside the box.

In-between those two chances there was controversy too, as Ashley Barnes’ arm got in the way of a goal bound Bernardo shot, but both referee Paul Tierney and his assistant had their views blocked.

Matt Lowton cannot keep Sergio Aguero’s shot from crossing the line

It wasn’t until the 63rd minute that Aguero finally got the opening goal and sent the travelling hoardes wild behind the goal. After scuffing his first effort, Aguero had a second bite of the cherry from eight yards out.

It looked like Matt Lowton had cleared the ball off the line, only for goal-line technology to confirm that it had just crossed the line.

City continued to press and only a phenomenal piece of defending from Ben Mee stopped Gabriel Jesus doubling the lead. He rounded Heaton, drove a low shot at goal and looked on in aghast as Mee hooked the ball off the line.

Although they continued to play on the front-foot, City could not double their lead. It was far from a nervy ending though, as they saw the game out with relative ease.

City host Leicester City next Monday night, before a trip to Brighton on the final day of the season. Win those two and they’ll be the first club to retain their title since Manchester United managed it ten years ago.
