While they’re currently not “close” to a new deal it seems as if it’s only a matter of time before Shane Doan and the Arizona Coyotes work out a deal to keep the captain with the franchise for at least one more year.

As he told Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports, Doan, who’s been with the Coyotes/Jets franchise for his entire 20-year NHL career, has been contacted by other teams expressing interest, but isn’t looking to leave.

“I’m not sure if it was just being curious or being gracious or people doing their due diligence, but I did appreciate it,” he said. “At the same time, I don’t want to play anywhere else. I had that opportunity before and I passed on it. I’m not going anywhere.”

Of the dozen teams that Doan’s agent says contacted him, three made “substantial offers.” Negotiations!

The Coyotes are under new leadership following general manager John Chayka’s hiring in May. While Doan is set to turn 40 a few days before the team’s opener in October, he is coming off a 28-goal campaign, his best since 2008-09. That should be enough to think a one-year deal should be easy to work out, but the two sides have yet to hammer out an extension.

The cap space is definitely there, and Chayka still has a couple of restricted free agents to take care of in Tobias Rieder, Michael Stone and Connor Murphy.

Doan was only one of two 20-goal scorers on the Coyotes last season. The addition of Jamie McGinn will help, as will the continued progress of Anthony Duclair and Max Domi. The team is certainly trending in the right direction and Doan has and will continue to play a role in that.

“Shane is so passionate about our team and our roster,” Chayka told Sarah McLellan of the Arizona Republic on Friday. “He’s excited to see some of the things we’re doing. It just adds a lot of clarity of how he can fit in and help grow the group and take this team to the next level. That’s his goal.”
