They Have Shown Other Countries How To Play This Format – Dinesh Karthik Picks England As His Favorites For The T20 World Cup
Senior India cricketer Dinesh Karthik feels England are in a perfect position to win the T20 World Cup, this year in the UAE. While revealing the schedule of the tournament, on Tuesday, the wicketkeeper picked Eoin Morgan’s side as his favourite for this year’s ICC event.
England have put their focus on white-ball cricket over the last five years – so much that their Test side has suffered for that. They did win the 2019 World Cup and are the top-ranked ICC T20 team. Their next aim is to be the first side to hold the ODI and T20 trophies simultaneously.
Dinesh Karthik, now a loved commentator as well, was effusive in his praise for the “brand of cricket” which Eoin Morgan’s side play. He feels they are the quintessential T20 team, led by a strong-headed captain.
“If you remove my bias for India because that is where I am from and ask me to something else, I would put England at the top of the run there,” Dinesh Karthik said while speaking in an ICC video.
“The brand of cricket that they have played. They have consistently shown other countries how to play this format right from ball one. They have shown it through 50 overs but more so in T20s. But also, a well-oiled team can do with a solid captain Morgan,” he added.
England are placed alongside Australia, South Africa, West Indies, and two other qualifying teams in Group 1 in the Super 12 stage.
Dinesh Karthik names the three players to watch out for in the T20 World Cup
The 36-year-old Kolkata Knight Riders player named Nicholas Pooran, Hardik Pandya, and Mitchell Starc as the three cricketers to watch out for in the tournament. He further heaped on the three players’ white-ball prowess.
“For me, Nicholas Pooran is someone who is special. There’s something called bat swing, and he has probably got the best bat swing cricket. He could hit a cricket ball farther than most have ever done. He is a very, very important player if West Indies want to move forward in the tournament,” Dinesh Karthik said.
“For India, that [character] is Hardik Pandya for me. He is there with the ball, he is there with the bat, and he plays a critical role with the bat, because every time India has floundered a little bit or want to up their run-rate, he is the guy. He can hit most bowlers to most parts of the ground… one of the reasons I really enjoy him. Even [with] his bowling, he is very clever.”
“Mitchell Starc, if he comes good for Australia. He’d be bowling those important overs for Australia, upfront, at the death. He has not been going too well, of late. But in the last series against West Indies, especially in the ODI format, he’s found his rhythm back,” he concluded.
