Sky has responded to reports that Soccer AM is ending after nearly 30 years on TV.

The football and chat show has been aired by the broadcaster on Saturday mornings since 1995, and at its peak was hosted by Tim Lovejoy and Helen Chamberlain.

However, it is now being reported (via The Guardian) that the series will come to an end on May 27, with Saturday Social taking over the slot next football season.

While they did not officially confirm the axing, a Sky spokesperson said in a statement: “Soccer AM has played an important role in our coverage of football for the past three decades, and we continually adapt to the evolving needs of our customers.

“We now go into a period of consultation to discuss the proposed changes with our people. We are unable to provide more detail while these consultations are under way.”

Soccer AM's ratings have declined in the last few years, and it has attracted controversy over its run, with the show originally arriving around the height of lads' mag culture.

A feature of the series called 'Soccerette', which saw young women model football kits and questions aimed at them about their relationship statuses, was scrapped in 2015.

Lovejoy, who hosted the show between 1996 and 2007, is now perhaps best known as a presenter on Sunday Brunch with Simon Rimmer.

Max Rushden took over from Lovejoy upon his departure, and hosted Soccer AM with Chamberlain until her own departure in 2017. The series is currently presented by John Fendley and former footballer Jimmy Bullard.

Soccer AM currently airs on Saturday mornings on Sky Showcase, Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Football.
