Social Chatter: In awe of Wayne Rooney, Joey Barton's faux pas and what was Wes Brown up to?

The best and worst from social media over the last seven days.

IN AWE OF WAYNE ROONEY

It’s fair to say that young fans being in awe of footballers is nothing unusual. It’s been like that for years and it was certainly the case for a young Swansea City mascot as he stood alongside Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney in the tunnel before Sunday’s Premier League game between the two sides. Social media has made a star of this young man. And even better for him, Swansea won the game 2-1.

MARTYN ROONEY’s NAME DILEMMA

Another Rooney - the British athlete Martyn - was in the news over the weekend when grabbing a World Championship bronze medal in the final strides of the 4x400m relay. It was a fitting end for the 400m runner, who missed the birth of his baby boy to be in Beijing. With the name of the little one still a mystery, he took to Twitter along with wife Kate, a former pole vaulter, to give some hints. Gold medallist and mother Jessica Ennis-Hill chipped in too. But what will he be called?

CAROLINE WOZNIACKI’s TALENT

Caroline Wozniacki, one of tennis’ top stars, is a former world number one and speaks six languages. Now, the former girlfriend of Rory McIlroy, has given us a glimpse of yet another of her talents - playing the concert piano. In the build up to the US Open, the Dane posted a short video of her playing Beethoven’s Fur Elise with the wording “Sunday night jamming session”. There’s a career waiting after tennis it seems.

LFC PREDICTION

Football fans love to make predictions. One Liverpool supporter, however, will be wishing his hadn’t come true. Seconds after Phillipe Coutinho was booked against West Ham for not retreating 10 yards following a foul, the disgruntled fan replied to Liverpool’s official twitter account. The bad news was his prediction of a sending off came true - something he quickly replied to. The tweets need no words from me.

JOEY BARTON

We’ve all said or written things that come back to bite us. Joey Barton has done it a lot. After signing for Burnley and declaring his happiness at joining the Championship side, some social media trawlers found old tweets in Barton’s accounts in which he abused the Clarets and their fans. Bless twitter. There’s no getting away from the past…

FAIL OF THE WEEK: WHAT IS WES BROWN UP TO?

Sunderland defender Wes Brown has to be the fail of the week as things threaten to kick off outside of a nightclub. Caught on camera, Brown had reportedly been thrown out of the venue. In a video posted to social media, he appears to argue with revellers outside. One even offers the advice of “Tackle him, Wes” as debates go on. What was actually happening is anyone’s guess, but it is safe to say Brown had had one or two too many. Watch the video and decide for yourself.
