Social Chatter: Masters champion Danny Willett upstaged by his brother

James Matthews finds that Danny Willett’s brother was the real star on Sunday evening and not the newly-crowned Masters champion.

Danny Willett may have won the Masters at Augusta, but it was his brother who was the real champion on Sunday evening.

Watching his brother land the year’s first major from home, PJ Willett was so prolific on Twitter that he was actually trending during the final holes at Augusta.

While his brother Danny was waiting nervously in the Augusta clubhouse to see if he had done enough to earn a famous green jacket, PJ was setting social media alight.

Willett produced a bogey free final round at Augusta to put himself in the frame and benefitted from a horror show on the 12th for defending champion Jordan Spieth, who had held a five-shot lead moments earlier.

Even worse for Spieth was the fact he had to hand a green jacket to Willett afterwards.

Willett tweeted a picture of himself wearing his new outfit.

It seemed like fate was behind Willett too.

Sunday was his wife Nicole’s birthday, and also the due date for the couple’s new baby. A baby boy arrived early, however, and in sufficient time to allow Willett to get to Augusta and play in the Masters.

Ian Poulter believes there is only one name the new arrival should be called now.

Willett’s fellow professionals also tweeted their joy at his success, the first for an Englishman in the Masters for 20 years.

Hailing from Sheffield, Willett’s fellow Yorkshiremen and England cricket stars Michael Vaughan and Tim Bresnan were also among those offering their congratulations.

What transpired with Spieth taking a seven on the par-3 12th was never going to happen…or so one expect thought. Twitter came back to bite him.

The reference was to Greg Norman’s capitulation 20 years earlier when he sacrificed a six shot lead to hand Nick Faldo victory.

And his repeated itself.

It meant that awkward handover too, Spieth misery being compounded by the fact - as defending champion - he had to crown the new winner with his green jacket.

Willett will have that honour next year, as well as choosing the menu for the Champions Dinner.

It’s got to be something northern involving gravy hasn’t it?
