Social Chatter: Sam Allardyce is just what England need, now can they win the World Cup?

James Matthews rounds up the best and worst reaction to Sam Allardyce’s appointment as England manager and his official unveiling.

Sam Allardyce has divided opinion since being named as the new England manager - but can he really lead the country to World Cup glory?

Allardyce was named as successor to Roy Hodgson, who quit after the dismal exit from Euro 2016, on Friday after the FA finalised their search for a new manager.

And after whirlwind weekend, Allardyce was officially unveiled at a press conference on Monday at St George’s Park.

So is he the right man for the job ahead of the start of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia?

Social media gave it’s verdict:

And Lineker wasn’t dampening down his enthusiasm after watching Allardyce’s first press conference as England boss.

There was plenty of others praising the appointment too.

There was also a special welcome from Mark Sampson, coach of the England women’s team and the man who led his side to the semi-final of the World Cup in 2015.

So what made him the right man for the job in the minds of so many? Well, after keeping Sunderland in the Premier League last season, this stat remained firmly intact.

For England fans, though, the reaction was mixed.

Some expect Allardyce to get the Three Lions roaring once again, others are fearful of what kind of football lies in store.

Many are predicting call-ups for some old favourites of Allardyce now ahead of his first squad announcement.

Is this what his line-up will look like?

Or will these feature?

But it’s clear German Chancellor Angela Merkel is not sure Allardyce is the right choice!
