Solskjaer hopes Man United can take inspiration from fan Tyson Fury by rising off the canvas to beat Tottenham

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer called on his ailing Manchester United stars to learn from one of their most famous fans and shrug off Liverpool’s knockout blow.

Heavyweight boxing world champion Tyson Fury has risen from the canvas multiple times during his unbeaten career and has also made a number of trips to Old Trafford to support the Red Devils during his downtime.

Saturday’s trip to Spurs pitches Solskjaer against another under-pressure boss in Nuno Espirito Santo, and the Norwegian wants to see his players learn from their 5-0 defeat and remain composed.

He told reporters: "Of course you have to hold your hands up - that performance is not acceptable. And you have to look at why it went as it did.

"I use the analogy that it felt like we were a boxer, being punch-drunk, getting knocked down in the first-round. We had a chance, we conceded a goal, and we wanted to sort it out and we went a bit too open and frantic against a good team.

"You see Tyson Fury when he gets knocked down a couple of times, it's remarkable how calm and composed he is on the floor, counts to six, seven, eight, and then he gets up and is ready to go again.

"Maybe we got up too early and tried to sort it. Minds have to be better, but of course we've had to look at different things as well, and of course you have to be up front and honest, the communication has to be direct."

Paul Pogba is suspended for the match while United are waiting to see if Raphael Varane will be fit to return and shore up the defence.
