South Korea 2-3 Ghana LIVE! Kudus goals win it – World Cup result, match stream and latest updates today

South Korea vs Ghana LIVE!

Ghana gave their 2022 World Cup campaign a huge boost as they saw off South Korea with a dramatic 3-2 victory at Education City Stadium in Qatar. Mohammed Kudus was the hero with two goals, with Mohammed Salisu also on the scoresheet for the inspired Black Stars.

Heung-min Son failed to have a major impact for South Korea, although Gue-Sung Cho's brace of headers just after half time helped Paulo Bento’s side battle back from 2-0 down to draw level at 2-2. But Kudus had the final say with an assured left-footed finish, to give Ghana a vital three points and condemn South Korea to bottom of the group.

They will have to beat Brazil to qualify for the last 16, while Ghana will fancy their chances after this thrilling triumph. You can see how all the action unfolded with Standard Sport’s live blog below.

Match report

Phew, what a game – another classic in this brilliant day of World Cup action! South Korea are dejected, they will feel they deserved a point there.

But it’s Ghana who get the points. Here’s a link to Standard Sport’s match report of a crazy match.

FULL TIME

15:01 , Dominic Booth

It’s finally over. A ridiculously entertaining ding dong battle comes to an end.

Ghana have clung on, despite coming under huge second half pressure – and seeing their early 2-0 lead evaporate in the second half. Mohammed Kudus is the hero.

14:58 , Dominic Booth

97 mins: How has the ball stayed out? Paulo Bento cannot believe it on the sidelines as Ghana survive again, another cross patted away by Ati-Zigi. It’s not over yet, though.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

14:56 , Dominic Booth

95 mins: Ati-Zigi keeps Cho out, another solid save that he maybe made look more difficult than it was.

Ghana are living seriously dangerously here, though.

14:55 , Dominic Booth

94 mins: Good defending from Ghana. Corner after corner for South Korea. The door remains closed.

14:52 , Dominic Booth

92 mins: Lovely feet by Son to work himself a chance. That was goal bound before the block came in.

The ball isn’t dropping in the right place for South Korea.

Injury time

14:51 , Dominic Booth

90 mins: Heading into added time. A whopping 10 minutes of it.

This is the goal that currently separates the two teams:

14:49 , Dominic Booth

88 mins: Baba Rahman, still of Chelsea – yes, really, check out his Wikipedia page – is going to replace Mensah. Ghana have now used all their substitutions.

14:48 , Dominic Booth

87 mins: Mensah is down in a bit of pain for Ghana, looks like a spot of cramp as his teamate helps him.

South Korea have got the final ball wrong since going 3-2 behind. They need to rouse themselves once more.

14:45 , Dominic Booth

85 mins: Kim Jin-Su fires over after Ghana allow another cross to bobble right across their 18-yard box.

You sense there will be the chances for South Korea to find a leveller. Can they take one of them?

14:44 , Dominic Booth

83 mins: A harmless volley from Abdul Samed means South Korea can breathe again following a Ghana corner.

14:43 , Dominic Booth

82 mins: It may well be a case of Ghana playing on the counter attack now, as they shift formation to a back five, and Inaki Williams leads the break with his pace.

(Getty Images)

14:41 , Dominic Booth

80 mins: Surely we can’t have more World Cup goals this afternoon?

The final 10 minutes plus added time will tell us.

14:40 , Dominic Booth

78 mins: Ghana are bringing on four players, including Sulemana and Fulham’s Denis Odoi

Kim Yong-Gwon went into the book just then. South Korea bring on Hwang Hee-Chan.

14:37 , Dominic Booth

76 mins: Son keeps being crowded out. That effort to double and triple mark him will only increase now, as Salisu clears off the line from Kim Jin-Su!

South Korea piling on the pressure.

14:36 , Dominic Booth

75 mins: The free kick doesn’t go in but it forces Ati-Zigi into a good save, to turn it round the corner. Well hit by Lee and we’ll have a Korean corner.

14:34 , Dominic Booth

73 mins: Son finally forces Lamptey into the foul that gets him a yellow card. Dangerous free-kick position, this.

14:34 , Dominic Booth

71 mins: After those two superb headers from Cho, you really thought South Korea were back in the game, and Ghana didn’t look like offering much – they’d done quiet since half time.

But Kudus has ensured it’s the Korean side who have everything to do again.

GOAL! South Korea 2-3 Ghana | Kudus ‘68

14:29 , Dominic Booth

Goodness me this is amazing to watch. Ghana have their noses back in front!

Kudus shows brilliant composure, after Williams misses the cross from the left. He strokes it home with his left foot.

14:28 , Dominic Booth

66 mins: Another stunning comeback that you didn’t see coming, just like Cameroon against Serbia earlier today.

And just like that game, the draw – entertaining as though it is – doesn’t really suit either side. So we may get more goals in the final 25 minutes or so.

14:25 , Dominic Booth

64 mins: Ghana look shellshocked. They don’t know what’s hit them.

Hwang goes down to get some treatment and the Black Stars might need this minute to just regroup and re-establish themselves in the game.

GOAL! South Korea 2-2 Ghana | Cho ‘60

14:21 , Dominic Booth

Madness! It’s 2-2. Football!

Cho again with the header, arriving at the perfect time to send the Korean fans into delirium. Ghana caught napping defending these crosses from the left.

GOAL! South Korea 1-2 Ghana | Cho ‘58

14:19 , Dominic Booth

Cho latches onto a fine cross from the substitute Lee, and steers it home with his head. 2-1

Sub

14:18 , Dominic Booth

57 mins: Lee Kang-In is coming on for South Korea, replacing Kwon.

14:17 , Dominic Booth

56 mins: Nearly 3-0 and again it comes from a Ghana set piece! Kim Moon-Hwan’s header nearly flies into his own net, and it’s another corner... which is cleared.

14:14 , Dominic Booth

53 mins: What a great save from Ati-Zigi! He keeps the gap at two goals with a superb parry from Cho’s header.

A save for the cameras!

14:12 , Dominic Booth

51 mins: Tariq Lamptey finds himself in the Korean box and in a little bit of space. He’s forced to take the shot with his unfavoured left and can’t get it on target.

The Brighton player has done well today.

14:10 , Dominic Booth

50 mins: Kim jumps but the cross from the right goes over his head.

That’s symptomatic of South Korea so far today, they’ve got into attacking areas but the final ball hasn’t been there.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

14:09 , Dominic Booth

47 mins: Some nice keep-ball from South Korea early in this second half.

Kim Jin-Su getting on the ball; he needs to link up with Son if they’re to get back in this.

Sub

14:07 , Dominic Booth

46 mins: Na has replaced Jeong for South Korea at the break. He started their clash with Uruguay and will play as an attacking midfielder.

SECOND HALF

14:06 , Dominic Booth

Let’s go again.

13:53 , Dominic Booth

Well, that half belongs to Ghana. After a wobbly start, they’ve dominated proceedings, looking really dangerous from crosses and caused problems through the experienced and well-known duo of Jordan and Andre Ayew. Salisu and Kudus both took their goals well.

Son’s shoulders are slumped as he trudges off. He needs to inspire this South Korea team.

HALF TIME

13:51 , Dominic Booth

After all those corners early in the half for Korea, Ghana finally have one of their own. They’ve got two goals from crosses... but this one doesn’t bring anything.

The half rather peters out for South Korea and the Ghana band keeps on playing. Those fans have every reason to be delighted.

(Getty Images)

Added time

13:47 , Dominic Booth

45 mins: We’ll have five added minutes.

Jung flashes a speculative shot across Ati-Zigi’s goal. That’s not troubling him.

13:44 , Dominic Booth

43 mins: Ayew is crowded out as South Korea’s defence finally get a handle on him.

Son charges down the other end, but in similar fashion he’s suddenly surrounded by two or three Ghana defenders and loses the ball.

13:42 , Dominic Booth

41 mins: A better spell from South Korea, with Kim Jin-Su getting forward more often from left-back to help the attack, allowing Son to drift into more central areas.

Can they find something before the break?

13:40 , Dominic Booth

39 mins: Ghana are top of the group as things stand!

Portugal and Uruguay will have something to say about that later, of course.

13:39 , Dominic Booth

37 mins: Suddenly, this is all Ghana. The Ayew brothers are dropping into some great positions, and there’s no shortage of bodies making late runs into the box.

South Korea cannot deal with it right now.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

GOAL! South Korea 0-2 Ghana | Kudus ‘34

13:35 , Dominic Booth

It’s 2-0 Ghana, they’re in dreamland!

Sensational ball from Jordan Ayew and Kudus flicks it on with his head to double the lead.

13:34 , Dominic Booth

34 mins: Smart football from Ghana. They’re keeping the ball better and making South Korea chase the game, now they have the lead.

Partey is getting on the ball plenty.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

13:33 , Dominic Booth

32 mins: Ghana are getting their centre-forward Inaki Williams into the game and he’s a handful for defenders that’s for sure.

That time, he should have released it though.

13:29 , Dominic Booth

28 mins: South Korea are looking very shaky when defending set pieces. Kudus’ delivery has been good so far, and Ghana look like scoring every time the ball is set into the box.

13:28 , Dominic Booth

26 mins: A VAR check is over... although there was a strong suspicion of handball there, and to be honest, we’ve seen them ruled out before.

The goal stands, though.

(Getty Images)

GOAL! South Korea 0-1 Ghana | Salisu ‘24

13:25 , Dominic Booth

Salisu scores after South Korea make a mess of clearing the free-kick. The Southampton defender stabs home from close range to break the deadlock!

13:23 , Dominic Booth

23 mins: That’s a great burst from Jordan Ayew but his delivery from the left is lacking quality. The game is starting to open up now.

13:23 , Dominic Booth

21 mins: A few handbags between Amartey and Cho off the ball, which Anthony Taylor spots and duly books the Ghana player.

Korean left-back Kim seems have a slight knock, and might have to come off.

13:20 , Dominic Booth

19 mins: Son’s corners have continually failed to find their target. Won’t stop the South Korean fans from loving him, though.

He then attempts what would have been an outrageous overhead kick... and gets it quite wrong.

13:18 , Dominic Booth

17 mins: Crosses going across the Ghanaian box, with Kwon looking dangerous out wide

A sixth corner for South Korea incoming...

13:15 , Dominic Booth

14 mins: Nicely played by Jordan Ayew to steer the ball away from trouble and win a free-kick.

Ghana with a chance to get up the pitch.

13:13 , Dominic Booth

12 mins: Salisu heads away the corner, but Korea come again through Son down the left and it’s... you guessed it, another corner.

13:12 , Dominic Booth

11 mins: A more controlled period of possession for South Korea, which ends in yet another corner.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

13:10 , Dominic Booth

9 mins: Bodies flying everywhere in the Ghana box. Shots raining in, blocks, another corner. An eventful start.

13:09 , Dominic Booth

8 mins: Nice chipped ball into the left side of the box by Hwang, as Jordan Ayew gets back to do his defensive work.

South Korea work a corner short, which Jeong hits and it’s deflected out for a corner. The Korean side are on top.

13:07 , Dominic Booth

6 mins: It’s become customary at South Korea matches these days, but it’s worth mentioning how loud the crowd become when Son gets the ball.

Lamptey fouls the Spurs man.

13:05 , Dominic Booth

5 mins: Kudus plays a free-kick deep into the Korean box but it’s well defended and the red shirts then break at speed.

Cho nearly gets on the end of a fizzing cross from the right.

13:04 , Dominic Booth

3 mins: It seems both teams will be fairly direct, with the Ayew brothers dangerous up top for Ghana, and South Korea keen to press high and then feed Son.

 (Getty Images)
(Getty Images)

13:02 , Dominic Booth

2 mins: Ghana won’t need reminding that a defeat here would see them eliminated form the tournament.

South Korea got a creditable draw against Uruguay, but with Portugal to come they’ll believe this is the game they can win in the group.

KICK OFF

13:00 , Dominic Booth

Son Heung-Min gave his teammates a right gee-up after their anthem. The Spurs star is bang up for this contest.

Both anthems were sung heartily in truth, so hopefully we get that intensity matched on the pitch. We’re off and running.

12:55 , Dominic Booth

The teams are in the tunnel and we’re almost set to go.

This was the scene inside the tunnel a whie ago, when the Ghana players arrived.

A reunion for Heung-min Son

Ghana boss Otto Addo is perhaps one of the least surprised coaches that Heung-min Son has made it so far.

He worked as a youth coach at Hamburg when the Korean winger moved to Germany as a teenager.

“He’s very, very disciplined,” Addo said ahead of the game.

“This is what I hoped for, and I expected it.”

Evening Standard score prediction

11:08 , Marc Mayo

The stakes are high in this encounter, with defeat ending Ghana’s hopes of qualification and anything less than a win for Korea making their path to the last-16 tricky with only Portugal left to play.

After a good first half against Uruguay, Paulo Bento’s side were dominated thereafter and lucky that the woodwork denied both Diego Godin and Federico Valverde.

After a dire first half, Ghana showed they are no pushovers against Cristiano Ronaldo and Co and were it not for Inaki Williams’ slip could have been celebrating a famous last-gasp point.

A draw could well beckon here though, which will leave the group finely poised before matchday three.

A 1-1 draw.

Early South Korea team news

10:47 , Marc Mayo

South Korea may once again be without Wolves forward Hwang Hee-chan, who missed the opener against Uruguay due to a slow recovery from a hamstring issue.

But talisman Heung-min Son appeared to have no problem playing in that facemask to protect himself after surgery to fix facial fractures suffered on club duty with Tottenham.

Hwang Ui-jo could be replaced by Cho Gue-sung in attack after South Korea failed to muster an attempt on target against Uruguay.
