Spain vs Germany LIVE: World Cup 2022 result and final score as Niclas Fullkrug hits late equaliser

Germany gave themselves hope of avoiding another early World Cup exit when they snatched a 1-1 draw with Spain as substitute Niclas Fullkrug fired home an 83rd minute equaliser that cancelled out Alvaro Morata’s opener.

The result leaves Germany facing a must-win match against Costa Rica in four days’ time and also means Spain have yet to book their spot in the knockout phase of the tournament.

Germany were looking in danger of suffering another early exit from the World Cup, after being eliminated following the group stage in 2018, before Fuellkrug took advantage of Jamal Musiala’s battling in the box to fire high into the net past Unai Simon in Spain’s goal.

Morata, himself a substitute, had increased the jeopardy for the Germans when he neatly flicked in a cross by Jordi Alba in the 62nd minute.

The Spaniards looked more relaxed from the start, cutting through Germany with their angled passing, and Dani Olmo almost created an early breakthrough in the seventh minute but his shot was palmed onto the bar by Manuel Neuer.

Hansi Flick reverses roles after Japan loss as substitutes save Germany against Spain

Sunday 27 November 2022 21:23 , Alex Pattle

By Richard Jolly at the Al Bayt Stadium

If substitutes were Germany’s nemeses against Japan, a replacement turned their rescuer against Spain. Hansi Flick was outwitted as Hajime Moriyasu’s changes conjured a famous win for the Japanese. Flick could at least savour the sense of a role reversal when Niclas Fullkrug lashed a shot past Unai Simon after a move that involved another whom Flick had introduced, in Leroy Sane. Germany, who had conceded in the 83rd minute to Japan, scored in it against Spain.

Given the gulf in class at times, they may not have deserved a draw. Yet for decades, Germany were the specialists in prevailing, whether emphatically or efficiently, on penalties or within regulation time. They pilfered a point.

Germany cling on to World Cup hopes and expose Spain’s flaws with battling draw

Sunday 27 November 2022 21:14 , Jamie Braidwood

Report by Miguel Delaney at the Al Bayt Stadium

A draw that might just show why a burgeoning Spain will fall short of winning this World Cup, and prevent Germany from falling out of it. It’s that fine a line, from an enthralling 1-1 draw.

Hansi Flick’s side need much more than that in their next game against Costa Rica, and also a favour off Spain against Japan, but they should feel considerable relief here. They have survived. They have persevered. It is remarkable to think that these sides went into this World Cup as equals, and that this game ended level. Spain were so much the better side, as evidenced by their positions in the group. Luis Enrique’s team also have flaws, as evidenced by the way they gave this win up.

Flick and Niclas Fullkrug do deserve credit there. They didn’t exactly display Spain’s class but they did show considerable resilience.

It can’t be discounted how badly they needed this, even if Costa Rica’s win over Japan took some of the edge off the game, and they need to drastically up things.

Spain vs Germany: Joshua Kimmich toils in shadows cast by luminous Pedri and Gavi

Sunday 27 November 2022 21:11 , Alex Pattle

For Spain, the message was to avoid complacency; to maintain the focus and intent that resulted in a 7-0 evisceration of Costa Rica last week. In Germany’s case, it was a rallying cry to find a level above the one displayed in a 2-1 loss to Japan. That would be the minimum requirement to keep alive the dream of stitching a fifth star onto the black block of night sky on their new jersey.

In Al Khor, Pedri and Gavi set out to avoid an eclipse and bring the bewitching, near-blinding light they had supplied against Costa Rica, a shimmer that has at times distracted from the grime coating this World Cup. All the while, Joshua Kimmich was tasked with toiling in the shadows cast by the ceaselessly creative teenagers, positioning himself between them, tracing the runs of whoever glided closer to him.

The 27-year-old, seen by some as the heir to Phillip Lahm, is in a simplified sense flexible and functional; able to excel in defensive midfield and at right back, much like Lahm before him. The midfield role was the one in which Kimmich was absorbed here. But the Bayern Munich star, like his teammates with their respective duties, often struggled in his venture to stifle those precocious playmakers.

Spain vs Germany player ratings: Super subs thrive as Alvaro Morata and Niclas Fullkrug score off bench

Sunday 27 November 2022 21:05 , Karl Matchett

Two big impacts off the subs bench - one for each team - leaves us with a draw in Group E. It means Germany have a lot to do in the final game, while Spain are top of the group.

Jamal Musiala and Pedri were both impressive, but the same cannot be said for some of the more senior players on show.

All square! Germany stay bottom of Group E, but they can still progress going into their final game against Costa Rica. They may need a favour from Spain, though, against Japan.

Spain 1-1 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 20:53 , Jamie Braidwood

90+5 mins: CHANCE! Brilliant from Goretzka to slide back and win possession, and suddenly Germany spring forward! Sane is played in and has Fullkrug to his right, but he tries to go around Simon! The Spain goalkeeper sees it out and then collects the corner!

Late drama!

Spain 1-1 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 20:52 , Jamie Braidwood

90+4 mins: The clipped cross from Kimmich goes over everyone. Goretzka had blocked off Busquets to create space for Rudiger anyway so it’s brought back for a foul.

Sunday 27 November 2022 20:46 , Jamie Braidwood

87 mins: Do either team have a big finish? This kind of suits both of them. Spain are fine with a draw, while Germany would have bitten your hand off for a point after going behind.

ANOTHER BIG IMPACT! If Morata’s finish was style, this is pure power from Niclas Fullkrug! The ball is rolled into Musiala, before the striker takes over. From the angle, he smashes a shot past Simon and high into the roof of the net.

Big, big equaliser.

78 mins: Handball? Sane has brought some intent to the Germany attack. He dribbles inside the box and weaves between challenges, before his flick catches Busquets’ hand. Germany ask for a penalty but his hand was down.

Fullkrug then runs into Laporte and wins a free-kick on the edge. Chance for Kimmich...

Spain 1-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 20:32 , Jamie Braidwood

74 mins: HUGE CHANCE! It should be 1-1! Spain’s back line is all over the place and Musiala is slipped through! He has time and space, maybe too much, and Simon stands up to make the save!

Musiala had Fullkrig to his left - the square ball was on for what would have been a certain tap-in.

Spain 1-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 20:31 , Jamie Braidwood

71 mins: There is danger now for Germany with the pace of Williams out on the right. He almost sets up Koke with a dink inside - but Neuer collects.

Remember, Germany will not be out if they lose. But they will require a favour from Spain and for them to beat Japan, as well as a swing of goal difference.

It’s his last involvement as Nico Williams comes on, while Koke replaces Gavi in midfield.

IMPACT! Deadlock broken!

And what a finish this is from Morata! Alba rolls a cross to the front post, where Morata beats Sule with his run. The striker leads with his right foot and dinks a delightful finish that beats Neuer at his near post! Stunning improvisation.

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 20:19 , Jamie Braidwood

61 mins: Superb play again from Musiala to duck in between two Spain challenges and win a free kick. It gives Germany another set-piece chance. This time, even if they had beat the line, the delivery from Kimmich drifts out. Poor.

54 mins: And Enrique has seen enough! Ferran is off and Alvaro Morata is on. Asensio moves over to the right.

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 20:11 , Jamie Braidwood

51 mins: The pattern of the second half has resumed where the first half left off: Germany getting plenty of numbers and pressure around the ball in midfield and making it hard for Pedri and Gavi to create.

Olmo then runs at Kehrer, who does well to see it out for a goal kick.

Spain 0-0 Germany

HALF TIME! Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:48 , Jamie Braidwood

Interesting. Germany make it to half time and Jurgen Klinsmann is “very pleased”.

“They worked themselves into the game. At the start they were a little bit nervous but they pressed high and made them nervous. Set-pieces will be key in the second half. They grew throughout the first 45 minutes.”

45+2 mins: More chaos at the set-piece, this time at the other end. Olmo’s cross towards the back post bobbles around the Germany box before hacked away for a corner. Germany clear and get to half time.

45 mins: Save! Another set-piece, another shot from Germany. The ball drops to Rudiger at the back post and his volley from the angle is saved by Simon, as Spain mop up the rebound.

Two minutes added on.

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:44 , Jamie Braidwood

43 mins: That’s sublime from Musiala. He receives the ball with his back to goal before holding off Rodri. He skips away but is brought down by Busquets, who is booked.

NO GOAL! Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:40 , Jamie Braidwood

No, offside! Let off for Spain, as Rudiger was in so much space at the back post! The cross from Kimmich’s was sublime. The line from Spain was static. But Rudiger went a split second too soon with his run before powering the header past Simon.

Also, that goal was ruled out very quickly by the VAR. Well done.

32 mins: CHANCE! Olmo makes the run down the left side and gets away from Rudiger. He squares the ball across the box and finds Ferran, but he can’t keep the first-time shot down! Big chance, but actually Olmo was offside on the initial run. Good line from Rudiger.

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:29 , Jamie Braidwood

28 mins: It’s been a sloppy 10 minutes or so, with chances now coming from mistakes in possession. Spain are on top but Germany will be happy with how their pressing plan is working so far.

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:27 , Jamie Braidwood

26 mins: Let off for Germany! Neuer passes it straight out to Olmo, who is sharp to pick out Ferran. The Barcelona forward had space but was not quick enough with his touch, and Raum can get back to make the challenge before he gets his shot off.

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:25 , Jamie Braidwood

24 mins: Close! Best moment from Germany so far. They win it back with good pressure on the halfway line. It’s flicked to Muller, who may have been offside, but Spain are able to cut it out. Simon passes it straight out to Gnabry, who shoots wide after cutting onto his left foot.

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:23 , Jamie Braidwood

23 mins: Not too clever from Spain as Laporte passes back to Simon, who has to volley into touch under pressure from Muller.

Enrique crouches on his haunches.

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:22 , Jamie Braidwood

21 mins: Spain come alive through Pedri as he finds space to burst forward. Germany show him inside and crowd him out, before Gavi tries to find Ferran with a drag-back and flick. Germany have good numbers behind the ball and Spain’s attack breaks down as Jordi Alba drags a shot wide on his right foot.

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:20 , Jamie Braidwood

20 mins: We have now, in the last few minutes, settled into more of a pattern. The atmosphere in the Al Bayt Stadium doesn’t sound too lively yet either, certainly in comparison to Argentina vs Mexico last night.

Spain 0-0 Germany

13 mins: This match had high billing but it has so far lived up to the hype. It’s being played at a frantic pace and is a level above most of what we have seen at this World Cup. Spain in charge of the possession early on.

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:11 , Jamie Braidwood

10 mins: Chance! That’s lovely play from Germany. They play through the Spain press as Gundogan flicks it forward to Goretzka, who drives on. His pass to Gnabry is a little late but Simon rushes out to make the sliding stop. Gnabry might have just been offside.

What a pace to this!

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:09 , Jamie Braidwood

8 mins: On second viewing, does Neuer get a bit lucky there? Olmo’s shot was fierce but Neuer almost palmed it into his own net. In the end he was quite lucky it only hit the bar.

Spain 0-0 Germany

Sunday 27 November 2022 19:07 , Jamie Braidwood

Group E permutations

After Costa Rica’s shock 1-0 win over Japan earlier today, no team can either be elimated or qualify for the last 16 tonight.

A Spain win would put Luis Enrique’s side in complete control. They would only need to draw against Japan to win the group in their last game. A Germany defeat would not be the end of the world. As long as they beat Costa Rica and Japan lose to Spain, they would be through. This would also be the case if Spain and Germany draw.

A Germany win would put all four teams on three points ahead of the final fixtures, but Spain and Germany would both be in a strong position.

Luis Enrique warned overconfidence could cause Spain’s downfall when they face Germany in their second Group E clash on Sunday.

Spain dominated their opening contest, trouncing Costa Rica 7-0 with the highest margin of any win in Qatar so far and netting the most goals the country have ever scored in a World Cup match.

It was a performance that surprised even their manager, who urged his players to remain measured in their response to the decisive victory.

Enrique said: “We tried to manage that victory with all normality. We got the three points, that’s it.

“It was a resounding victory that fills us with confidence, but we shouldn’t have too much confidence. We are facing an opponent, Germany, against which we cannot be overconfident otherwise they will hammer us.

“We have a very smart squad, smart enough to know that we have to respect our opponent, and we will have to give it our all. It’s a great challenge.”

Germany boss Hansi Flick wants the focus on his side redirected from politics to competitive matters as they approach their critical encounter with Spain on Sunday.

Germany sit third in Group E after one round of matches following their surprise 2-1 loss to Japan on Wednesday, so picking up points against Spain – coming off a 7-0 victory over Costa Rica – will be essential.

Some suggested the Germans were distracted by the debate surrounding their decision to stage a pre-match protest ahead of that midweek opener, a conversation Flick was keen to move past.

He said: “It’s just the way it is. We need to accept a lot of other things about all this noise in the background of what happened before the tournament, and the story with the armband. The main focus for me has been the football.”

Spain vs Germany big match preview, by Miguel Delaney

As Luis Enrique was talking about how sex the night before games is fine, but an “orgy” is “not ideal”, Hansi Flick - well - was seeming metaphorically impotent. It was Ilkay Gundogan who had been the strongest voice in a crisis meeting after the defeat to Japan, where Germany’s somewhat unlucky display started to come apart as Flick desperately threw on more forwards. The breakthrough didn’t come with either Niclas Fullkrug or Youssoufa Moukoko.

These weren’t exactly the most inspired or imaginative decisions.

Flick and his staff have since been scrutinising the Spanish match against Costa Rica, looking for different ways to get at them, but also the gaps in their own team. Thilo Kehrer is expected to come in for the struggling Niklas Sule.

More insight than that will be required, and not just because of how good Spain were in that 7-0, or how it is a rare group-stage clash between heavyweights that could slam Germany out.

It is also a meeting between the only two coaches at this World Cup to have recent major club success. And what success. The two are responsible for the last two trebles in the Champions League. Luis Enrique won with Barcelona in 2015, Flick with Bayern Munich in 2020.

Now all eyes turn to what many predicted to be the clash of the World Cup group stages as Spain take on Germany in Group E, in a meeting of two former champions.

Spain thrashed Costa Rica 7-0 in their opening fixture as Luis Enrique’s side made a flying start, while Germany were stunned by Japan in a 1-0 defeat.

Earlier today in Group E, Japan were unable to build on their shock opening win against Germany as they fell to a disappointing defeat to Costa Rica.

The result is a boost to Germany, who will no longer be knocked out if they lose to Spain tonight. A draw may even be a good result.

Another World Cup day, another World Cup moment of history. Just 90 seconds after kick-off, Canada had their first-ever goal at a finals, Alphonso Davies had his moment of redemption and the Qatar tournament had its earliest goal in any game.

The best side in Concacaf qualifying had shown their qualities in the opener against Belgium without earning reward - mostly due to Davies seeing a penalty saved, but with profligacy elsewhere too.

This time the fast start brought the best reward of all, but despite those opening scenes of jubilation and pride, promise and potential, Canada are out.
