Young players have been left “devastated” by Arsenal’s decision to close down their Women’s Player Development Programme (PDP) for girls aged seven to 15, Telegraph Sport has been told. Up to 300 girls are understood to be affected by the closure, which was communicated to parents in a brief email on Wednesday. Run at five satellite sites across Hertfordshire and Middlesex, the programme previously involved one session per week, 24 times a year, as well as mini tournaments. However, no sessions
Hurdler CeCe Telfer will not be allowed to compete in the U.S. Olympic trials this week because she has not met World Athletics standards for transgender athletes, USA Track and Field said. Telfer had hoped to participate in the women's 400 metres hurdles, the qualifying rounds for which are scheduled for Friday at the trials in Eugene, Oregon. "While CeCe Telfer has met the performance qualification standard, she has not met the conditions established in the World Athletics ‘Eligibility Regulations for Transgender Athletes’ and is therefore ineligible to compete," USA Track and Field said in a statement.

When NBCUniversal airs the Tokyo Olympics next month, expect coverage from a new type of “venue” far from the action at the pool or court. As the world emerges from a pandemic, NBCUniversal is crafting programming to compensate for an Olympic Games bereft of international visitors by attempting to bring spectators closer to the action and highlight the emotions of families unable to cheer on their loved ones from up close and in person. “In the past (when an athlete wins) we would cut away to a relative in the stands, and instead we're cutting away to a living room in Illinois,” said Molly Solomon, executive producer and president of NBC Olympics Production.

Tottenham have held talks with former Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo over the vacant manager’s position at the club. The Portuguese coach, 47, is the latest person Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has turned to after seeing discussions break down with Paulo Fonseca last week and Gennaro Gattuso ruled out. Espirito Santo has also been considered at Crystal Palace and Everton this summer following his departure at Molineux after four years at the club where he led them into the Premier League and to
The R&A has been warned that there could be withdrawals from the 149th Open Championship because of the strict coronavirus protocols, with the governing body already receiving several angry emails since the players and their teams were informed of the regulations earlier this week. With the British major taking place at Royal St George’s in Kent in less than three weeks’ time, the pros have been shocked by the severity of the restrictions, with several having to cancel their planned accommodatio
The German was seen showing his seat to compatriot and four- times world champion Sebastian Vettel, who races for Aston Martin, after last weekend's French Grand Prix. Former Ferrari driver Vettel is close to Schumacher and a trusted friend of the family, offering advice as an old hand in the paddock. "We’ve actually been talking about it (the seat) before and I took the opportunity to show it to him," said Schumacher, whose team have yet to score a point this season and are last overall.
Italy stormed into the last 16 scoring more freely than in past European Championships, but it is their near-impenetrable backline that makes them favourites to beat Austria in Saturday's knockout game and head deep into the tournament. Italy won their first two games 3-0 - after never netting three before at the Euros - then also beat Wales 1-0 in their final group fixture despite resting senior players. Now the Italy defence is again one to be feared.
