St. Mary's Wired Knights perform well

Jan. 27—GREENSBURG — The Wired Knights robotics team from St. Mary's School in Greensburg again had a very successful season.

In the last four competition seasons they have taken five different teams to the state finals. One year, they had two teams competing in the championship round.

On Nov. 12, 2023, they competed at Center Grove Middle School in Greenwood against 30 other teams from central Indiana. The team finished in second place in the robot performance games.

That result allowed them to advance to the semi-state round held in Evansville at the University of Southern Indiana on Dec. 10. The Knights competed against 39 teams from south/central Indiana and did very well. They finished third for robot performance games, and after their presentation came in second overall in the semi-state competition.

That success allowed them to continue to the championship round.

On Jan. 20 , 2024, the Wired Knight competed in the Indiana "FIRST" LEGO League State Championship. The tournament was hosted by Westfield High School. The top 36 teams from around the state competed.

The Knights finished fourth place in the state in the main event, the robot performance games.

St. Mary's Wired Knights team members include David Lutterbach, John Harpring, Jacob Roell, Cole Alexander and Zachery Roell. The team is coached by Rick Kramer, Chris Harpring and Matt Roell.

The organization "FIRST" (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen.

The competition includes three presentations: core values, robot design and a STEM research project.

After a morning of presentations in front of professional judges, all teams compete in head to head robot challenges. The robots are designed, built, and programmed by the team ahead of time, to complete missions on a game field.
