Stanley goalkeeper Toby Savin completes Shrewsbury switch

Stanley goalkeeper Toby Savin has completed a move to League One side Shrewsbury Town on a two-year deal.

The 23-year-old had reached the end of his contract with the Reds and had been offered fresh terms to remain at the Wham Stadium.

Shrewsbury say they have beaten "a number of clubs" to secure Savin’s signature as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.

Manager Paul Hurst told the club website: “Toby is a keeper that has got a lot of games behind him – especially when you consider his age.

“Last season was a difficult one with a couple of injuries. But before that, he managed to get over 100 appearances under his belt, most of which were in League One.

“During that time, Toby attracted interest from clubs higher up the leagues.

“He is a player with plenty of potential and has all the attributes to be a really good goalkeeper.

“Our job – and particularly Brian Jensen’s - is to make sure he fulfils that and becomes the best version of himself.”

Savin has been at Stanley since the age of 16 and signed his first professional deal in the summer of 2019.

The shot stopper made his senior debut the following season in an EFL Trophy tie against Fleetwood. His first league outing came against Peterborough in 2020.

Savin went on to play 112 times for the Reds, competing with the likes of James Trafford, Nathan Baxter and Lukas Jensen.

He only featured 10 times last term due to injury, with Manchester United loanee Radek Vitek filling in during the second half of the campaign.

Savin will now work with former Burnley man Brian Jensen, who is the goalkeeper coach at Shrewsbury.

Salop finished 19th in League One last season under Hurst, who returned to the dugout in January.
