Steve Bruce: Newcastle United appoint manager to replace Rafael Benitez on three-year contract

Newcastle United have appointed Steve Bruce as the club's new manager to replace Rafael Benitez, agreeing a three-year contract with the 58-year-old.

Bruce resigned from his post at Sheffield Wednesday earlier this week as talks reached an advanced stage and it has now been confirmed that he will take up the post at St James' Park.

He becomes the 10th permanent manager of owner Mike Ashley's controversial 12-year reign over Newcastle and has a hard act to follow in Benitez, who consistently overachieved despite limited investment in the playing squad.

Benitez departed last month, claiming Newcastle did not share his vision.

Bruce grew up as a Newcastle United supporter, something the club drew great attention to in their statement announcing his appointment.

"There is a huge challenge ahead of us, but it's one that my staff and I are ready for," said Bruce. "This is my boyhood club and it was my dad's club, so this is a very special moment for me and my family."

Lee Charnley, managing director at Newcastle United, said: "Steve knows what this club means to supporters and to the region and he will put his heart and soul into leading our talented group of players with the full support of our staff."
