Steven Gerrard has already approved Liverpool transfer 'target' who is 'right up there'

Steven Gerrard gave a glowing endorsement of the midfielder reportedly wanted by Liverpool

Liverpool's potential move for Aston Villa midfielder Jacob Ramsey has already been endorsed by former captain Steven Gerrard. It is set to be a busy summer at Anfield after Arne Slot was finally confirmed as Jürgen Klopp's successor.

Slot will assume the title of head coach, meaning he will not have complete control over transfers. Instead he will work alongside new sporting director Richard Hughes, who will officially start work next month.

Liverpool is likely to prioritize a defensive addition following Joël Matip's departure but The Telegraph reports that Ramsey has admirers at Anfield.

It is claimed that Tottenham and Newcastle are both keen on Ramsey too, as Villa seek to comply with Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules. Unai Emery's men will ultimately need to make sales this summer before strengthening for its maiden Champions League campaign.

Ramsey caught the eye under Gerrard during his time in charge at Villa Park with the Liverpool legend singing his praises back in 2022, amid calls for a first senior England call-up. He said: "I want him to make his own headlines with his football. He is a top talent.

"I know the level of the England players, I’ve been around it, and have enough experience to know it’s only a matter of time. I’m loving every moment of working with him. He is getting stronger with each game because we’re giving him the platform to express himself.

"He is in a wonderful place and will be a terrific player. It won’t be long before the whole country is watching him I’m sure. He is right up there, let me tell you.”

Ramsey has had a difficult season with injuries under Emery and has not played since suffering a foot injury in March. The midfielder has been restricted to just eight starts in the Premier League.

The report states he has no desire to seek a move away from boyhood club Villa this summer. Emery's side is only likely to entertain a deal if it has failed to sell other players.

Liverpool.com says: Ramsey emerged as one of the brightest young players in the Premier League under Gerrard but injuries have stalled his progress somewhat. He would be an excellent addition to the Liverpool squad with more goals from midfield certainly needed. It doesn't appear he is keen on leaving Villa but he may have little choice come the end of the window.
