Steven Gerrard 'ramps up' transfer attempts for Rangers duo James Tavernier and Connor Goldson

Steven Gerrard is accelerating his attempts to lure James Tavernier and Connor Goldson to Saudi Arabia, according to reports.

The former Rangers manager is believed to be keen on a reunion with both Ibrox defenders and previous reports suggested they were high on his Al-Ettifaq shopping list this summer. Both have faced criticism from the Gers support in recent times with just one league title and two domestic trophies during their long stays.

Gerrard has already bought from the UK market with ex-Celtic stars Jack Hendry and Moussa Dembele along with Gini Wijnaldum, Demarai Gray and Jordan Henderson, who has already left for Ajax. He's looking to strengthen further after finishing sixth in the Saudi Pro League.

That involved ramping up efforts to sign Tavernier and Goldson, according to Al-Riyadiya. The report states the Saudi side are preparing an offer they hope will be too good for Rangers to turn down for their defensive duo.

Philippe Clement has previously insisted he wants both to stick around for next season but any money the Ibrox men can bring in from player sales will help fund his much needed squad rebuild in this transfer window. Gers have already signed Brazilian left-back Jefte and winger Oscar Cortes and midfielder Mohamed Diomande permanently following positive loan spells.
