Swansea City Fan View: Can Ayew brotherly love give the Swans a boost?

Fitness pending, this Saturday could see both Ayew brothers take the field in Swansea City shirts for the first time.

And, truth be told, it’s probably the best time this family reunion could have happened.

Jordan Ayew is currently one of the first names on the team-sheet, having found some great form in recent months. Some of his play and his goals have been fantastic – he’s a completely different player under Carlos Carvalhal.

His older brother Andre is no stranger to the Swans, and performed very well for the club when he first played for us back in 2015. That relationship soured as he ditched the club for West Ham the following season, but a forward with his talent is welcomed back with open arms – especially considering how light we are up front at the moment.

The Ghanaian pair have played together well previously at Marseille, so there’s big anticipation over whether they can strike up a notable relationship on field for the Swans this season.

Oh brother!

Although – as many will know – this isn’t the first time brothers have played for Swansea at the same time.

In the 1930s, Swansea Town featured two sets of brothers through that decade: Bill and Phil Tabram, and Len and Tom Emmanuel.

But the most famous brotherly period in Swansea’s history was the 1950s. This decade saw four sets of brothers on Swansea’s books. This included the legendary pairing of Ivor and Len Allchurch, while we also had Cyril and Gilbert Beech, Alan and Colin Hole, and Bryn and Cliff Jones.

And yes, pretty much all of those could slot into today’s team with no problems.

But the list doesn’t stop there, as the late sixties also saw Billy and Tony Screen play with Swansea. And finally, in the mid 2000s, we had the magnificent pairing of Lee and Adebayo Trundle.

Okay, that last one is completely made up – just keeping you on your toes.

While not every brotherly partnership was a match made in heaven, if the Ayew brothers are even a quarter as successful as someone like the Allchurch brothers, we’ll have a pretty good few months ahead of us!
