Swansea City Fan View: We all dream of a team of Lukasz Fabianskis

Fabianski is certainly the favourite for Swansea play of the seasonIt’s that time again. The final few weeks of the season, where we all begin to reflect on the 2017/18 campaign (do we have to?), and determine Swansea City’s player of the year.

This season has just been awful for the Swans. The majority of performances have been lacking any sort of fight, we have scored very few goals, and conceded a ridiculous amount. The weaknesses of the squad have truly been exposed.

Try picking a player of the season from that…

Still, we have to. So, with a few games still to go, here are my early candidates.

Lukasz Fabianski

While the 18 losses and 52 goals conceded suggest otherwise, the Polish keeper has been a rock this season as usual.

When everything falls to pieces and the team are losing 5-0, Lukasz Fabianski is the guy who ensures it doesn’t end up 10-0. Usually with a couple of incredibly dramatic saves thrown in, which also provides fans with some much-needed entertainment (because we aren’t getting it at the other end…).

He’s also kept Swansea in games throughout the season, single-handedly saving points for the club while his defenders go AWOL (pretty much every game). If Swansea do stay up, it will largely be down to Fabianski, which is why he gets my vote for player of the season.

Jordan Ayew

Mr Inconsistent. Although there is no denying how important Jordan Ayew has been for Swansea at times, in both goalscoring and chance creation.

This season, Swansea have been incredibly goal-shy, scoring just 27 Premier League goals – currently the lowest tally in the league (joint with Huddersfield).

Whereas Fabianski has been saving us down one end, it’s usually Jordan Ayew saving us up the other. So far, the Ghanaian has scored 11 goals in all competitions (seven in the league), making him the club’s top goalscorer this season so far.

The problem is that Jordan Ayew is either hot or cold. Sometimes he can go on a dazzling run and score a magnificent solo goal. But, more often than not he goes missing, like many of his teammates. Still, were he to win the award,it would be deserved.

Alfie Mawson

Mawson is another candidate for player of the season

While nobody really filled the Ashley Williams-shaped hole at the back, Alfie Mawson has come closest in terms of strength, ability in the air and leadership at the back. He has also popped up at the other end, scoring three goals for Swansea in all competitions. Unfortunately, just like Williams, he’s also prone to a mistake or three.

Has he done enough to be dubbed player of the season? Probably not as much as Fabianski, but he deserves his nomination.

While he can be inconsistent, you would certainly rather him playing than not. His performances also earned him a deserved call-up to the England squad a few weeks ago. We are all aware that, if the Swans are relegated, chances are we’ll say goodbye to Mawson this summer.
