Swansea City Fan View: Let's ride the wave of optimism with some investment

Finally, something to celebrate for Swansea City

I had a feeling it may happen – Swansea City grinding out a shock win against Liverpool.

It certainly doesn’t hide the fact that we are still rock bottom of the table. But it does give the players and fans a huge boost in morale. There’s optimism around the club again – but it’s now up to those in charge to invest and keep it going.

Three beautiful points

Despite collective groans as the starting eleven was read out ahead of the match, the team actually played like a team for 90 minutes. Players looked improved and pulled their weight across the pitch, fighting until the final whistle.

I’m not sure what Carlos Carvalhal has said to them, or how he’s conducting training, but things are starting to come together.

But I still feel it’s pointless getting too excited. We’ve seen a handful of wins this season. A handful of ‘turning points’. And all of them so far have turned into nothing.

New players are still vital

Don’t get me wrong – the Liverpool win was fantastic, and it could be a sign of things to come in what remains of the season. We’ve now seen that, shoved into a corner, the current side can fight against a good team and pick up three points.

However, no matter how good they were on Monday, I just can’t see the current team keeping that intensity up over the next few months.

Worryingly, we heard over the weekend that Carvalhal was confident his side could stay in the Premier League without any January transfer window signings.

As any Swans fan who isn’t disillusioned will tell you, the team is still severely lacking across all positions. We still weren’t playing with a recognised striker against Liverpool. And all it will take is another injury or two to really screw us up again.

We’ve been given a wave of optimism, so if those in charge would consider riding this wave with some new signings, we could really gain some momentum. Then, after the next round of the FA Cup, we’d be ready to take on Arsenal with some renewed vigour.

Because another point at home to Arsenal at the end of the month is crucial, especially with the other relegation scrappers picking up results.
