Swansea City Fan View: A typical heel-dragging transfer window

Will Carlos Carvalhal have much of a say in the transfer window this January?

The odd way Swansea City are going about their transfer business is similar to a club that’s pretty happy with their season. It’s also nothing less than we’d expect.

That’s right, we’re over a week into the January transfer window and there’s been zero movement from the Swans.

Sure, the club have been linked with many names, but no actual accruals in a team that’s desperate for fresh blood.

We’ve all see Swansea’s season develop. At full strength, with no injuries, the team is capable of producing a spirited performance and the occasional win. But it’s not been enough. No matter who the manager is, we’re severely lacking talent and depth.

Plus it’s rare we’re at full strength, with plenty of injuries and suspensions. So new players are essential.

What do we need?

A complete overhaul, yes, but in this transfer window we’ll have to be more specific.

Ideally we’d like to see some players that Carlos Carvalhal wants and can get the best out of. Not someone that the owners bring in simply because it’s the most wallet-friendly option.

The current shopping list is: a solid right-back, a creative midfielder, a striker that can score, and a goalscoring winger (or at least one that can cross). All with Premier League experience if possible.

What do we not need?
It’s just as important for Swansea to hold onto stars like Fabianski

Goalkeepers. It’s a running joke that Swansea waste money on goalkeepers that will never play for the first team. Although it’s not a funny one, as it’s money that could go elsewhere.

We also don’t need any squad players who will sit on the bench and collect a handsome wage for doing little more than training. Same goes for promising youngsters from Falkirk or the French third division.

We also need to keep hold of important players such as Lukasz Fabianski and Alfie Mawson. Those two have been rumoured to be wanted by other clubs, but if Swansea have any chance of survival in the Premier League, the club needs to add to their assets – not sell their best players for a quick buck. We’ve seen how that kind of behaviour impacts the club.

Who will we end up with?
Fulham’s Ryan Fredericks seems to be the most likely rumour at the moment

We all know Swansea love to sign a former player, so my money is on David N’Gog.

Okay, I’m (semi-) joking, but Andre Ayew’s name has been mentioned several times. He certainly wouldn’t be a bad signing, and it would be interesting to have a set of brothers playing. Not quite the Allchurch brothers, but there are worse things that having Andre Ayew back.

But that’s unlikely. Not quite as unlikely as Jonathan Viera from Las Palmas, who has been a longtime target for Swansea, but the La Liga outfit are keen to keep hold of their star players as they struggle for survival (something the Swans should learn to do).

There’s also Ryan Fredericks from Fulham, which seems more of a likely signing. That would be the fullback sorted, but – even if we do sign him – we’ve still got a long way to go to really strengthen for what will be a brutal few months in our quest for survival.
