Swansea City Fan View: Promising start to the transfer window but Sigurdsson and Llorente must not be sold

More than mid-way through January and Swansea have finally seen some action in the transfer window – mostly positive, although perhaps a little underwhelming.

The biggest and most exciting news is that the club have completed the signing of PSV winger Luciano Narsingh for a fee of £4million. He’s a pacy Dutch winger who is renown for scoring a few goals, and may be able to provide some of the end product we’ve so desired, and have so lacked.

Of course, we won’t hold our breath – Borja Baston was touted as the guy to take Swansea to the next level, but we all know how he panned out. Still, I am confident that Narsingh will deliver – he’s fast, can score, and can deliver a ball into the box. Let’s hope he doesn’t lose any of his talent when playing with the rest of the muck currently in the side!

Next on the list of signings is a defender – not the central defender we were hoping for, but a defender nonetheless. Left back Martin Olsson arrived from Norwich earlier in the week, on a two-and-a-half year contract costing around £4million. As I say, he’s not our dream signing, but will replace Neil Taylor who has truly disappointed over the last few seasons.

And finally – for now at least – we see the return of Tom Carroll, who has joined the club from Tottenham for a fee said to be around £4.5million. Again, this is a pretty mediocre signing, although some fans are happy to see the 24-year-old return.

He didn’t do much with Spurs since rejoining after his loan spell with the Swans back in 2015, but a fresh face in the centre of the park – possibly a longer term replacement for Leon Britton – is welcome.

I guess time will tell with all three of these new signings – although time is not on our side.

Elsewhere, the pretty uninspiring striker Marvin Emnes has also returned to Swansea after a loan spell at Blackburn. He scored three goals for Rovers in 20 games, which says it all (basically, ‘he’s alright in the Championship’).

We can’t really class him as a squad booster though. Yeah, he scored that goal against Cardiff all those years ago, but fingers crossed he doesn’t make many more appearances for the Swans. Until we are in the Championship, I guess – then he may become useful again.

But providing a good centre-back joins the club in the next week or two, I think we’d be satisfied with the action that has taken place. Things couldn’t get much worse, and about five new faces would have enough impact to turn things around.

This is assuming the Swans manage to retain the services of the most important players, including Gylfi Sigurdsson and Fernando Llorente. Keep these guys in the squad and this will probably be deemed a successful transfer window.
