Swansea sack Monk for raising expectations

Swansea City have confirmed that they have parted company with Garry Monk after he was unable to deliver the kind of results he had made the club believe they could achieve.

Despite working with limited resources, Monk secured Swansea’s highest-ever Premier League finish last season, exceeding expectations and as a result vastly raising expectations.

This season proved harder and Monk struggled to impress a board that had decided anything less than a title challenge and a Champions League semi-final was acceptable.

New horizons

“Garry worked wonders for this club,” chairman Huw Jenkins told FFT. "He challenged people’s perceptions of what Swansea City could achieve and took fans to a position beyond their wildest dreams, a position from which we were unable to ignore Garry’s poor run of results. The kind of run that we went on [under Garry Monk] showed that we shouldn’t settle for relegation dogfights and the poor spell that we’ve endured [under Garry Monk]. And don’t get me started on the Champions League. When I asked Garry how we were getting on he was full of excuses but that’s no good to me when I’ve taken the liberty of flying to Zagreb on a Tuesday night for the fixture I presume we’re about to play.”

Reports suggest that Swansea will look for a new boss who will lower expectations and then manage to deliver those lower expectations.

Among the favourites to take the job is David Moyes, whose Real Sociedad reign lowered expectations so effectively that his team were given a hero’s reception by the fans each time they managed to successfully come down the tunnel in the right kit.
