Sweden vs Belgium LIVE!

Defender Linda Sembrant fired a stoppage-time winner to give Sweden a 1-0 win over Belgium on Friday and set up a Women's Euro 2022 semi-final against hosts England next Tuesday.

The Swedes kept Belgium pinned back for most of the first half and should have taken the lead when Stina Blackstenius slotted the ball home in the 25th minute. However, a VAR review showed that she was just offside when Kosovare Asllani passed her the ball and the goal was chalked off.

The second half was almost identical with the Swedes pouring forward and the Belgium defence standing resolute, and goalkeeper Nicky Evrard pulled off a brilliant reflex save to deny Blackstenius in the 73rd minute. The game looked to be heading for extra time when the Swedes won a corner in the second minute of second-half stoppage time, and Sembrant reacted quickest to rifle the ball home to send the Swedes through to the last four.

Sweden are through to face England in the final four!

GGOOOOOAAALLLLL!!! Sweden 1-0 Belgium

21:48 , Marc Mayo

90+1 mins: SWEDEN HAVE DONE IT!

Sembrant pops up to slam home after a corner is nodded down and falls to the defender!

21:47 , Marc Mayo

90 mins: Three minutes added on before what feels like a very likely extra 30 minutes.

Dhont tries to force the issue and crosses into the waiting arms of the goalkeeper.

21:45 , Marc Mayo

88 mins: A very fine sliding tackle from Nilden shuts down a Belgian break with Dhont a real threat since coming off the bench.

Up the other end, Asllani forces a yard of space nicely before whipping a long-range hit past the far post. As you were.

21:44 , Marc Mayo

87 mins: Eriksson the latest Swede to direct a shot off target.

Belgium make a change with Biesmans, who has been struggling with a knock, off for Missipo.

21:40 , Marc Mayo

84 mins: Angeldahl off for Bennison as Sweden introduce the matchwinner from their narrow win over Switzerland in the groups.

21:37 , Marc Mayo

81 mins: A header flashes wide of the far post and that is shot number thirty for Sweden so far.

Only eight have been on target and none have hit the back of the net...

Meanwhile, a crowd of over 7,500 announced at Leigh Sports Village is announced, a very decent turnout.

21:35 , Marc Mayo

78 mins: A bit of needle emerging between Asllani and Biesmans down the left wing, a feisty battle featuring shirt pulling ending in some terse words.

The referee calms things down with that the first sign of frustration coming out of the Swedish camp in particular.

21:32 , Marc Mayo

75 mins: You can sense the excitement in the crowd as Belgium pop up with the ball in the opposition box, yet a weak pass ends the opening.

A better cross in from wide is comfortably nodded away.

A Belgium goal now, as they say, would put the cat right among the pigeons.

21:29 , Marc Mayo

73 mins: SAVE!

Evrard makes another fine stop to deny Blackstenius from close range! That had to have been 1-0...

Just the seven saves from the Belgium shot-stopper so far.

21:28 , Marc Mayo

71 mins: Once again the Sweden delivery is far from lacking but the finish is.

A fine ball in from Bjorn to recycle a corner reaches Asllani at the far post. Heading is not really her game and the effort drops harmlessly wide.

21:24 , Marc Mayo

68 mins: Dhont on for Deloose as Belgium introduce fresh legs at the back.

And the substitute is straight on the attack leading a rare foray into Swedish territory, before Lindahl claims Wullaert’s cross.

21:22 , Marc Mayo

66 mins: Delightful run on the diagonal from Kaneryd reaches the penalty spot but she passes instead of shoots and Belgium get a vital foot in.

Sweden firmly in command in this period.

21:20 , Marc Mayo

63 mins: A few appeals from the crowd for a handball that is waved away, before VAR has a look as play goes on.

Angeldahl aims a shot-cross into the goalkeeper’s palms and the replays show that would have been a mightily harsh penalty. Not given.

21:18 , Marc Mayo

61 mins: Not far over from Angeldahl who claims the ball from Asllani’s nice lay-off but she hits it so early that the long-range drive flies off-target, albeit with Evrard stretching.

Asllani is down after taking a hit for that little flick but should carry on.

21:15 , Marc Mayo

58 mins: This game may well come down to who keeps concentration better as the legs begin to tire.

Will it be the Belgians’ passing game that subsides or will the Swedes lose the edge of their pressing game?

21:11 , Marc Mayo

54 mins: Belgium doing a good job of slowing the game down when given the chance, the Red Flames enjoying long spells of possession as Sweden maintain their high press.

That feels their best route to a breakthrough.

21:05 , Marc Mayo

49 mins: Asllani nods the ball onto the crossbar, digging out a really good header from 12 yards out... but the flag goes up - it wouldn’t have counted.

21:03 , Marc Mayo

47 mins: Sweden straight on the front foot and the ball bounces up kindly for Rolfo, who smacks a volley straight into Evrard’s arms.

Half time!

20:46 , Marc Mayo

It’s goalless at the break with Sweden’s disallowed strike by Blackstenius the closest we have come in a pretty intriguing contest.

20:45 , Marc Mayo

45 mins: A better cross almost picks out Asllani but drifts into touch as the fourth official puts up one minute on the board.

20:44 , Marc Mayo

44 mins: Drifting towards the break after a ball in from Rolfo fails to get near a player. Sweden could do with some time to sit down and regroup.

20:41 , Marc Mayo

41 mins: An absolute downpour hitting Leigh right now but it isn’t harming the energy in this match...

20:39 , Marc Mayo

39 mins: An overdue reply from Belgium as a first shot on target forces Lindahl into relatively comfortable action.

A cross from Wullaert is headed away and Sweden win a free-kick to end the pressure.

20:36 , Marc Mayo

36 mins: Philtjens goes into the book for Belgium to allow Asllani the chance to load the ball in...

The ball is flicked goalwards and once again the defence is stretching to clear yet just about make it stick!

20:34 , Marc Mayo

32 mins: Once again Sweden threaten from set plays and Evrard is very happy to land on the ball in a goalmouth scramble that the Red Flames just about survive.

These close-range close-shaves aren’t landing for the Swedes and their swipes from range have been far too off-target to threaten the opener.

20:31 , Marc Mayo

30 mins: That disallowed goal has given Belgium a bit of belief and Vanhaevermaet lines up a shot from outside the box, with a decent connection as it flashes wide of the post.

GGOOO-NO!

20:24 , Marc Mayo

26 mins: Blackstenius thinks she’s given Sweden the lead with a fine finish one-on-one...

But VAR wants another look and rules it out! A narrow escape for Belgium.

20:23 , Marc Mayo

23 mins: Bjorn slashes at a bouncing ball after her header from a corner is blocked, a sign of the imprecise efforts Sweden have mustered in front of goal so far.

20:22 , Marc Mayo

21 mins: Halfway into the first half and Belgium have had the possession, 57 to 43 per cent, but most of it has been in non-threatening areas.

And that Sweden press is determined to force errors - with the favourites five shots to zero ahead in that category.

20:18 , Marc Mayo

18 mins: There is a sense of the opener only being a matter of time.

Can Belgium hit back? A counter attempt is quickly dealt with by the Swedes.

20:14 , Marc Mayo

14 mins: HOW’S THAT NOT GONE IN!?

Rolfo’s far-post header is nicely palmed away by Evrard but Blackstenius is there to mop up the rebound and put Sweden in front... but the ball just won’t go in!

Belgium escape again in the goalmouth scramble.

20:11 , Marc Mayo

11 mins: CHANCE!

Sweden’s high press is working very nicely and Rolfo puts a foot in, with the ball sent back to Angeldahl for a hit from 18 yards.

She gets her foot right underneath it and Belgium escape.

20:09 , Marc Mayo

9 mins: Belgium look to cause trouble with a corner from the right and Lindahl can’t get a glove on it, but an attacker cannot get a head on it and the ball is shepherded out.

20:06 , Marc Mayo

6 mins: SAVE!

Evrard forced into action after Angeldahl lines up a whack from range and the parry wide is very necessary, with the ball curling away from the goalkeeper and towards the far post.

From the corner, that same player Angeldahl swipes a volley over the bar.

20:05 , Marc Mayo

5 mins: De Neve gets across well after Sweden break down the right, Asllani not quite able to pick out her teammate.

After the throw-in, Kaneryd just overhits a nice touch around her marker and the ball rolls into touch. Plenty of energy about the game already.

20:02 , Marc Mayo

2 mins: A boisterous atmosphere in Leigh for tonight’s game with plenty of yellow in particular in the stands.

A first move forward from Sweden is closed down with some lovely interplay by Belgium. A counter forms but Minnaert’s ball in is dealt with.

Nathalie Bjorn continues to deputise for Sweden veteran Caroline Seger, who is only on the bench after a heel injury tonight.

The midfielder says: “I normally ask her for a bit of advice ahead of a match, so that I know what to think about. It differs from match to match and what I need help with but we have a dialog and she is a fantastic captain.

“During the match she’ll come out [on the sideline] and coach me and give feedback.”

Justine Vanhaevermaet has warned Sweden that Belgium are still improving ahead of tonight’s game.

“It’s only our second tournament so I understand that people are underestimating us a bit but we’re just very happy that we’ve shown what we’re capable of,” said the Reading player.

“The quarter-final means a lot to me and I think the same goes for the whole team.

“It’s great for Belgian football as a whole. We’ve received some very positive messages from home. We’re very proud of making it to the quarter-finals that was our target.

“We have a lot of very good players, also very young talented players so I hope more and more players like them can become professional and I think you haven’t seen the best yet.”

19:18 , Marc Mayo

Sweden head coach Peter Gerhardsson would relish a semi-final showdown with England at Euro 2022.

Hosts England have been in impressive form during the tournament and they have since been made the new favourites to go all the way, but Gerhardsson would love to take them on after watching their quarter-final win over Spain on Wednesday.

“I decided to stay in my room to watch the game and I thought it was a really good game of football,” he said.
