SWIMMING: Corydon Central wins second straight MSC title

Jan. 20—CHARLESTOWN — The Corydon Central girls won their second straight Mid-Southern Conference championship Thursday night at Charlestown.

The Panthers won six events, including all three relays. North Harrison was second while the host Pirates placed third in the six-team event.

Madison Stilwell was a two-event winner for the Panthers with firsts in the 200-yard freestyle (2 minutes, 5.30 seconds) and 500 free (5:35.01). Stilwell was also part of Corydon's victorious 200 free relay team, along with Ella Johnson, Ava Gerdon and Kailee Flanders.

Johnson paced Corydon by winning the 100 breaststroke (1:17.10) with Flanders finishing second. Johnson was also a member of the triumphant 200 medley relay team with Georgia LaHue, Megan King and Sydney Edwards.

Addison Applegate, Gerdon, King and Stilwell combined to win the 400 freestyle relay for the Panthers in 4:18.45.

Two second- and third-place finishes in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke events helped the Panthers. King led the way in the 100 butterfly while LaHue led in 100 backstroke. Additionally, the Panthers finished second through fourth in the 200 individual medley.

CHARLESTOWN

The Charlestown Pirates finished third in the conference.

Laura Klimits broke the school record in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.85 in winning the event. Her first victory came in the 200 IM (2:22.85). The foreign exchange student was also part of the Pirates' second-place 200 freestyle relay team with Justice Humes, Raelyn Blackstone and Bianca White.

Additionally, Blackstone finished second in the 200 freestyle while White was second in the 50 free.

SILVER CREEK

The Silver Creek Dragons finished sixth.

Alice Wade was the highest finisher for the Dragons. She finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke.

BULLDOGS SWEEP PIONEERS

NEW ALBANY — Host New Albany swept Providence in a dual meet Thursday night.

The New Albany girls won 11 of the 12 events en route to a 126-49 triumph over the Pioneers.

The Bulldogs boys won nine events on the way to a 108-65 win over Providence.

GIRLS

Maria Faust was the first New Albany winner in the 200 freestyle in 2:30.57 while teammate Stacy Kate Elliott was third.

Lila Waters led the Bulldogs with a first in the 200 IM. Elise Rainwater followed Waters in second for New Albany.

Abigail Holder won the 50 freestyle in 27.54 seconds with teammate Peyton Lamb following in 29.29.

The Bulldogs went 1-2-3 in the 1-meter diving, 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke events.

Freshman Cali Kruer won the diving competition with 252.75 points with Stella Klaus (232.20) and Elena Edmiston (167.65) were second and third, respectively.

Ellie Scharlow led the charge for the Bulldogs in the 100 freestyle with Katie Bishop-Randolph and Faust finishing second and third, respectively.

Peyton Lamb led the breaststroke for the Bulldogs in a time of 1:22.56. She was followed by Bishop-Randolph and Charlee Rogers.

Holder and Rainwater went first and second in the 100 backstroke for the Bulldogs.

Melissa Buchanan was the lone winner for Providence. She captured the 500 freestyle in 6:37.31.

M.E. Kraft added the second-highest finish for the Pioneers with a second in the 200 free.

Though there weren't many wins, Providence totaled seven drop times.

BOYS

Sam Jaggers and Colin Kruer were double-event winners for the victorious Bulldogs.

Jaggers led the charge in a 1-2-3 sweep of the 200 freestyle (1:49.81) with Nate Samsel and Cooper Jaggers following behind.

Sam Jaggers added a victory in the 100 backstroke (56.57).

Kruer won the 1-meter diving with 280.95 points and the 50 freestyle in 24.03.

The Bulldogs swept the top three spots in the 100 breaststroke with Logan Papp leading the way in 1:09.64 and Matt Lorch and Gage Dilsaver finishing second and third, respectively.

Matteo Zakel was a double-winner for Providence. Zakel won the 100 butterfly (58.19) and the 500 freestyle (5:22.13).

Additionally, Andrew Millay added a victory in the 200 IM (2:16.06) for the Pioneers.

Providence totaled seven time drops in the meet.
