Swindon learn identities of all opponents for next season

Following Crawley Town’s promotion to League One via the playoffs, Swindon Town are now aware of all of their opponents for next season.

The whole League Two line-up for 2024/25 has been confirmed as Crewe Alexandra became the last team to be decided following their 2-0 defeat to Crawley at Wembley last weekend, a result which saw former Swindon quintet Scott Lindsey, Dion Conroy, Ben Gladwin, Ronan Darcy, and Kellan Gordon move up to the third tier.

Town’s miserable 2023/24 campaign sees them remain in the fourth tier for a fourth straight season, the joint-longest period in the club’s history, alongside the four campaigns they spent at this level between 1982 and 1986.

Alongside the cast that remains from last season, Swindon will be joined by Carlisle United, Cheltenham Town, Fleetwood Town, and Port Vale following their relegations from League One.

The Robins will take on the role of Town’s local derby this season and Swindon will hope they can end the unfortunate record they have against the Gloucestershire side, having never won a competitive game at The Completely-Suzuki Stadium, and their last win of any sort over Cheltenham was 1-0 in 2012.

There will be another old score to settle with the relegated sides, as Town will face Port Vale for the first time since their playoff semi-final defeat on penalties at Vale Park in 2022, a match which ended with multiple Town players being attacked by pitch-invading supporters.

Bromley will also play in the EFL for the very first time following their playoff win, they were promoted alongside Chesterfield, who romped back to this level following a five-season absence.

Swindon have only ever met Bromley once in their history, a 7-0 FA Cup First Round home victory in 1976, so they will be visiting Hayes Lane Stadium for the first time this season.

The Spireites have immediately become the bookmakers’ favourite for back-to-back promotions, with Carlisle and Milton Keynes Dons the other early contenders for the title.

Swindon’s own odds are rather longer, with them being seen as the joint-fifth least likely side to win the title at this early stage.

Town will have a fair amount of travelling to do next season, with their 23 away trips seeing them rack up 6,826 miles on the road, roughly a 296-mile round trip on average, with only the trip to Cheltenham seeing players and fans being on the road for less than 100 miles.
