Astley and Tyldesley Cycle Speedway Club staged a full programme of racing at Gin Pit on Sunday with the hosts winning two out of three matches.

Riders faced variable weather conditions during the afternoon, with rain showers, strong winds and sunshine, to contend with but the track held up well throughout.

A&T and Heckmondwike fought out a close battle in the North & Scotland League Division Two match.

The scores were level at 39-39 at the interval as race exclusions for Levi Edwards and Nahom Tumizghy cancelled out a first race 6-4 win by Steve Harris and Josh Pilkington.

In complete contrast, A&T took heat wins in five of the next six races, as Heckmondwike’s veteran riders tired, to clinch the match points with one race to go.

Heckmondwike took a consolation 7-2 in the last race, to make the final score 76-70, in A&T’s favour.

Duncan Whalley raced unbeaten for A&T, with Emily Burgess and Steve Harris losing only to Heckmondwike’s two best riders, Darren Kent and Dan Green. Josh Pilkington’s contribution was vital to A&T’s win.

A&T scorers: Duncan Whalley 19 (plus 1 bonus), Emily Burgess 18, Steve Harris 16 (1), Josh Pilkington 13, Nahom Tumizghy 5 (1), Levi Edwards 5, Charlotte Brighouse (dnr).

A&T raced to a convincing 71-7 win in the Northern League Division Three match, as Alex Lawless and Josh Pilkington both raced unbeaten in the under-10 and U13 categories, respectively.

The day’s racing concluded with an entertaining first-team challenge match against Wednesfield.

The West Midlanders took 11 6-4 heat wins during the match, to run out 101.5-78.5 winners, in a very sporting match.

A&T’s top three riders of Terry Norman, Duncan Whalley and Steve Harris battled manfully, to keep A&T in contention throughout.
