Mumbai Indians’ wicket-keeper batsman Ishan Kishan has stated that he’s honored to be part of the Indian team for the World Cup but expressed that he didn’t expect his name to be included in the 15-member squad.

Team India announced its squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup late on September 8, Wednesday. Experienced players, Shikhar Dhawan and Yuzvendra Chahal were left out while Ravichandran Ashwin made a comeback to the white-ball squad.

Ishan Kishan, who has been on the rise ever since debuting for India against England, was included in the main squad most likely as a backup batsman. Taking to Instagram, the explosive batsman mentioned that he will try his best to perform well at the biggest stage.

Really honored. I wasn’t expecting my name to be there in the first 15. I think it’s a recognition of the hard work put in by my family and coaches. It’s a very big opportunity for me to step up for my country on the biggest platform of world cricket. And I’ve seen your [fans] messages and I’m really overwhelmed. Thank you so much for your lovely wishes. Thank you,” he said.

Chetan Sharma said that Ishan Kishan is a great player of spin and his flexibility to play as an opener or a middle-order batsman positively affected his case. Shreyas Iyer was the frontrunner but an injury early this year forced the selectors to add him to the reserves.

Ishan Kishan can bat as an opener as well as fit in as a middle-order batsman. He gave us a lot of options as a player. He’s already opened in the T20I format and even got a fifty. He’s also a good player of spin in the middle order.

Also, a left-hander is important. When leg-spinners from different countries come at us, someone explosive like Ishan is important. Shreyas hasn’t played much cricket of late so we have kept him on standby. That’s why Ishan made the cut,” Sharma revealed to Times Now.

Kishan had a terrific season in the IPL 2020 where he scored 516 runs in 13 innings including four half-centuries. He averaged 57.33 while also maintaining a high strike rate of 145.76
