T20 World Cup: Co-hosts US and West Indies to face off in Super 8 match on Friday

The U.S. and the West Indies cricket teams, the two host countries of the ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup 2024, will face off against each other in a Super 8 match on Friday in Barbados.

The U.S. cricket team experienced a bit of a setback in their last match against South Africa on Wednesday, as did the West Indies against England on the same day.

While the West Indies has previously won the T20 World Cup twice, one in 2012 and one in 2016, the U.S. cricket team emerged as the underdogs serving hits after hits, especially against Pakistan, which propelled them toward the second stage of the tournament: the Super 8.

The Super 8 stage of the tournament will see eight teams split into two pools of four, with the top two teams from each to go through to the semi-finals later this month. The U.S. is grouped with England, the West Indies and South Africa.

The U.S. cricket team's progression to the group stage also automatically qualifies them for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which will be hosted by India and Sri Lanka. The team will also get a boost in prize money, with all teams reaching the Super 8 guaranteed a minimum of $382,500, according to USA Cricket.

U.S. coach proud of the team's achievements

U.S. cricket team coach Stuart Law said at a news conference on Wednesday that he's proud of what his boys have accomplished, explaining that their loss against South Africa boiled down to the team's inexperience.

"To get to the Super 8s was a phenomenal effort, but to then push South Africa. You can see they got nervous towards the back end of their innings," Law said. "You can tell the inexperience that we do have particularly against the bigger teams and that's OK. You only get experience by playing."

While he said the U.S. team didn't get the result they had hoped for, "we showed we can compete against some of the best players in the world."

The U.S. cricket team also faced setback with the shoulder injury of Captain Monank Patel. Law said that Patel is recovering well but did not comment when the player will be fit to play Friday.
