Arsenal are working on a deal for Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu on transfer deadline day.

The Gunners want to sign a right-back before the summer window shuts at 11pm BST on Tuesday night and they have identified the versatile 22-year-old as a prime target.

Tomiyasu is viewed as someone who could operate at right-back or in the heart of defence, while his age profile suits Arsenal’s forward planning.

Tottenham were quoted £20million for the Japanese international earlier this summer before going on to sign Cristian Romero from Atalanta and pursuing Barcelona full-back Emerson Royal.

A move for Tomiyasu is expected to be contingent on outgoings at Arsenal, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Hector Bellerin both trying to leave.

Bellerin was, as of Tuesday morning, in talks with Real Betis over a loan move, while Maitland-Niles is hoping to join Everton for the season.

Everton made a loan offer for Maitland-Niles on Monday, but it was turned down by Arsenal and the 24-year-old publicly voiced his frustration on Instagram.

“All I want to do is go where I’m wanted & where I’m going to play @Arsenal,” he wrote.

Both Bellerin and Maitland-Niles have slipped down the pecking order at Emirates Stadium and they are ready to leave for fresh challenges.
