Taunton Deane senior sides have mixed fortunes on weekend

Taunton Deane's First XI are still looking for a first win of the season.

Despite a positive start in Saturday's game against Clevedon, the team unfortunately didn't secure a victory.

As the league season nears its halfway point, the Deane's team had a promising start but unfortunately didn't translate this momentum into their eagerly-awaited first victory.

Clevedon seemed to be within Deane's grasp with a score of 62 for five, however, a formidable performance from Sean Dickson and 33 extra points severely hindered Deane's chance of victory.

Dickson, a player proven by a first-class triple hundred under his belt, was a major obstacle until a catch by Ed Mellor concluded his run at 121.

On the Deane side, Ali Hamid and Sam Burgess were the only batters to make strides beyond 20, with Burgess leading the battle with a hard-hitting 54.

Despite the team's best efforts, reaching Clevedon’s overall total of 274 became just a battle for batting points.

Their final score of 194 included a noteworthy 10th wicket partnership of 61 between Burgess and Ben Squire.

The quality of Deane's opening bowlers was a highlight of Saturday's match.

Jim Brehaut nabbed three of the first wickets, while Ed Mellor carried out his job responsibly, granting just 32 runs and taking two wickets from his 10 overs.

The team is hopeful that their upcoming visit to Keynsham will wrap up the first half of the season on a higher note, and that the second half will bring stronger and more resilient performances.

On a brighter note, the Deane Second XI showed solid effort at North Perrott CC, with five players scoring more than 25, and Ali Warren leading the charge with a respectable 57.

Will Rogers performed impressively with 14 boundaries in his 110 in response from North Perrott.

Despite their concerted efforts, however, North Perrott ended the game six short of Deane’s total, closing on 254 for seven.
