In 2001, a teenager faced the most successful male Wimbledon champion in the Open era. The teenager was Roger Federer. The seven-time champion was Pete Sampras.

In the end, the teenager won in five sets, and proved to himself and everyone else what he was capable of.

In the latest edition of Wimbledon Re-Lived from The Tennis Podcast, Sampras’s coach that day and Federer’s some years later - Paul Annacone - describes what Sampras said about Federer afterwards, and the conversation the champions had at dinner together 10 years later.

Presenters Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Matt Roberts re-watch the match and examine what happened next for both players.

They also reflect on a piece Law wrote 19 years earlier, after he had travelled to Biel in Switzerland to interview Federer and his team. Read here.

The ninth edition of Wimbledon Re-Lived will cover the people’s Monday final between Goran Ivanisevic and Pat Rafter, also in 2001.
