The Daily Sweat: Yankees and Guardians look to advance to ALCS as NBA season begins

The NFL once again did the whole world a disservice by putting the Denver Broncos in a prime-time slot for the fourth time in the first six weeks of the season. However, sports fans were relieved all day knowing that if things got bad (which they did), they would instead have the opportunity to watch a do-or-die game between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians.

Unfortunately, we never got that option. The Yankees and MLB decided to postpone the game after making fans suffer through a rain delay of over three hours as they waited to decide their best course of action. That best course of action according to the powers that be was to play the game on Tuesday at 4:07 ET instead.

The postponement certainly changes the equation for both teams, and that's reflected by the odds. Yesterday, the Yankees were -160 favorites to win Game 5 at BetMGM. Today, the Bronx Bombers are -175 favorites.

The most important change is the pitching situation for the Yankees. Instead of starting Jameson Taillon, the Yankees will send Nestor Cortes to the mound on three days rest. Cortes was an all-star this past season with a 2.44 ERA. He started Game 2 of this series for the Yankees, giving up two runs over five innings in a no-decision.

The extra rest also widens the bullpen options for Yankees manager Aaron Boone. Taillon will now be available out of the pen. Reportedly, Gerrit Cole told Boone that he was available on Monday. Boone sounded hesitant to use him after he threw 110 pitches on Sunday in Game 4. Maybe the extra day makes Cole a more realistic option. Wandy Peralta gets a much-needed day off as well after he pitched in relief in all four of the games in this series. The Yankees were hesitant to use Clay Holmes on back-to-back days earlier in the series, but that's no longer a concern.

The Guardians will start Aaron Civale in Game 5, just like they planned to do yesterday. However, Shane Bieber is waiting in the wings. He would be pitching on three days' rest, just like Cortes. You have to think Bieber will factor into this game somehow. The Guardians already had the better bullpen entering the series, and their main high-leverage guys are well rested. Trevor Stephan, James Karinchak and Emmanuel Clase all have not pitched since Game 2 of the series.

It'll be all hands on deck in a do-or-die game for both teams. You have to think the afternoon first pitch negatively impacts any home-field advantage the Yankees have, as fans will be rushing from work rather than enjoying any pregame festivities. The value play is likely the Guardians at +145 on the moneyline. I also usually like the under in elimination games as neither manager will allow a pitcher to get beat up. The hook will be quick.

NBA season gets underway

With the Yankees-Guardians game being played mid-afternoon, the NBA season should be starting right around the time baseball wraps up, setting up for a fun sports night. The NBA begins its season Tuesday with an intriguing two-game slate.

In the first game, the Boston Celtics are 2.5-point home favorites against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Celtics enter the season as the favorites to win the NBA title even with head coach Ime Udoka suspended for the entire season. Philadelphia obviously poses a tough challenge with MVP contender Joel Embiid, James Harden and Tyrese Maxey.

The night cap features the defending champion Golden State Warriors playing host to LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. Both teams enter the season with plenty of drama surrounding Draymond Green and Russell Westbrook. The Warriors are 6.5-point home favorites on Tuesday night. Dennis Schroder is out 3-4 weeks for the Lakers due to a thumb injury.

NHL season rolls on

The NHL enters the second week of their regular season with an eight-game slate on Tuesday. The highlight of Monday's slate was the Arizona Coyotes, who pulled off a 4-2 win on the road in Toronto against the Maple Leafs. Toronto was a -550 favorite on the moneyline prior to puck drop. Coyotes bettors cashed at +400 on the moneyline, which is just insane price for an October NHL game.

The highlight of Tuesday's NHL slate is the matchup between the Vegas Golden Knights and Calgary Flames in Calgary. Both teams are yet to lose this season and both teams figure to be contenders in the Western Conference. The Flames are -160 home favorites, which feels a little steep.

If you're into trends, wait for the Vancouver Canucks to take a multiple goal lead on Tuesday night and then live bet the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Canucks are the first team in NHL history to have a multi-goal lead in their first three games and go on to lose all three games.
